What does the quote mean?

Defying the British

• British used customs ships to stop smuggling

• One of these, the Gaspee, ran aground

• 150 colonists seized the ship and burned it

• Result: Committee of Correspondence– It helped colonies unify by communicate

about British activities

The Gaspee Affair

• To help British East India Company:– Britain Passed Tea Act making it cheaper to

buy British Tea

• Colonial merchants feel they will be pushed out of trade opportunities

• Committees of Correspondence alert colonies of Tea arrivals- Boston Tea Party

Boston Tea Party

• Boston Tea Party led to Coercive Acts

• Designed to force colonists to behave even if violate English rights– Closed Boston’s port until tea paid for

– Ended election of officials and banned town meetings

– Quebec Act- King appointed its leaders

• Known as “Intolerable Acts”

First Continental Congress

• Many want to adopt Albany Plan of Union

• Instead, write Declaration of Rights and Grievances– Express loyalty to King, but

complain about Coercive Acts• Most important- Set a date for a

second meeting- May 1775

Lexington and Concord

• April 18, 1775- British moves to take supplies at Concord

• Paul Revere’s famous ride

• British encounter 70 Minutemen at Lexington

• As minutemen are surrendering, a shot is fired

• British return fire, killing 8 and wounding 10 Americans

• British then march to Concord and destroy stockpiled weapons

• 4,000 Patriots gather along the road returning to Boston

• Patriots shoot at British from behind trees, stone walls, ect.

• 70 British soldiers killed and 170 wounded

• First American Victory
