Since the beginning , the Levy fami ly has been there for the Seat t le
Kol le l . 20 years ago, Dr. Rene and Belor ia Levy were the f i r s t honorees of the Seat t le Kol le l on January 3 rd , 1993.
So i t is a par t icu la r ly g reat honor, fo r the Levys , that th is year for the 21st Seat t le Kol le l Dinner, the honorees a re thei r son and daughter- in- law, Dr. El ie and Mi r iam Levy.
Rene & Belor ia a re proud, but not su rpr ised .
“A l l thei r l ives we have taught ou r chi ld ren to be involved in the communit y. Not just the synagogue, but the whole communit y,” says Rene. “ In a ser ious way, not just g iv ing money, but g iv ing of themselves .”
The Levy fami ly were ear ly suppor te rs of the Kol le l a f te r thei r rabbi , Rabbi Solomon Maimon, founder of the Seat t le Kol le l , and Rabbi-Emer i tus at Sephardic B iku r Hol im , convinced them and others that br ing ing a Kol le l to Seat t le was ver y impor tant for bui ld ing of communit y.
El ie & Mi r iam have been involved in the Kol le l and the g reater Seat t le
Jewish communit y s ince El ie retu rned to Seat t le with h is br ide, Mi r iam, in 1997.
“Right away they got involved, helping , host ing , being leaders here,” says Rabbi Av rohom David , Rosh Kol le l of the Seat t le Kol le l . “They are g reat examples of young fami l ies involved in every aspect of ou r communit y.”
“Being involved is impor tant to the Levys”, El ie says . Rais ing thei r ch i ld ren in th ree local Jewish schools , join ing al l th ree local Or thodox synagogues; par t icipating on var ious commit tees
and, in El ie’s case, se r v ing as president of Sephardic B iku r Hol im in f rom January 2008-February 2010 , a re just a some of the ways they have par ticipated, “We en joy shar ing our love of Torah , Judaism and communit y,” Mi r iam says one recent Monday morning as she prepares to host a week ly Torah class taught in thei r home by Rooksie David .
El ie g rew up in Seat t le, the oldest of th ree chi ld ren . Born in Par is , h is Moroccan-born parents brought the
fami ly to Seat t le in 1970 so that Rene, a pharmacist and professor, could work and teach at the Univers i t y of Washington, and the fami ly could be par t of a st rong Sephardic communit y.
El ie g raduated f rom Seat t le Hebrew Academy, where several of h is ch i ld ren at tend today, and Yeshiva Or Hazafon, the predecessor to the Nor thwest Yeshiva H igh School , where the oldest two boys now study. Fou r years at the UW were fol lowed by medical school at the Alber t Einstein Col lege of Medicine of Yeshiva Univers i t y.
M iriam g rew up in B rook lyn , where she at tended Yeshivah of Flatbush
Elementary school & H igh School , then Ste rn Col lege for Women, fo l lowed by Azr ie l i G raduate School of Jewish Education of Yeshiva Univers i t y. The oldest of 10 chi ld ren , her parents have always been active communit y par t icipants . Her mother, Sh i f ra Hanon has been a teacher at Yeshivah of Flatbush HS for 25 years and ser ves on the board of the Sephardic Communit y center. Her father, Rabbi Ezra Hanon, a businessman, se r ves on var ied commit tees at Congregation Shaare Zion of B rook lyn , and is a chaplain in hospita ls and nu rs ing homes and of f iciates f ree Jewish bu r ia ls there. They are Mi r iam’s g reatest mentors of Hesed.
D r . E l ie & M i r iam Lev y
“It’s how we live our lives, reaching out, sharing our love of Torah, Judaism and community. “

The couple mar r ied in 1994 and moved to Mont real fo r El ie’s
advanced t ra in ing . Mi r iam taught f i r s t g rade Judaics there, and they began thei r fami ly. Th ree years late r they came to Seat t le, where Mi r iam continued subst i tute teaching as thei r fami ly g rew.
El ie opened Dermatology of Seat t le, in Bu r ien , but a lways t r ies to work h is busy medical practice around the fami ly : Raymond, Ezra , I saac, Jacob, Belor ia , Av raham, and Solomon .
Everyone is in school th is year. The older boys a re at Nor thwest Yeshiva High School, the next three at Seattle Hebrew Academy, and the two youngest at Torah Day School of Seat t le .
A typical week might f ind parents and k ids at var ious spor ts or socia l
events th rough the schools , at a fest ive dinner at Ezra Bessaroth , at a k iddush at Sephardic B iku r Hol im , and many mornings or evenings at se r v ices or learn ing at Seat t le Kol le l .
“We l i ke to help make the minyanim,” El ie says . “Dai ly Tef i l lah is an impor tant par t of ou r l ives”.
That pat te rn continues at home where the fami ly ’s d in ing table of ten doubles as a study center for v is i t ing schola rs and students .
“They are always host ing someone,” says Rooksie David , who has known Mi r iam as a parent, a student and most of a l l , a f r iend . “ I can always count on Mi r iam, and of course on El ie, to be ready to help, on a commit tee, to make a meal , to help a f r iend or someone in need. She gives of hersel f , w ithout quest ion .”
Rooksie’s Monday morning class meets in the Levy’s comfor table
l iv ing room where the wal ls a re l ined and sometimes double-stacked with Jewish books and Judaica . Th rough the ta l l w indows are peek-a-boo v iews of Seward Park and Lake Washington . The adjacent din ing room is hung with por t ra its of famous rabbis . “We have a deep respect for ou r Rabanim & hope thei r images in f luence us to fol low in thei r ways” El ie says . “We want ou r home to be a place for people to learn and love being Jewish ,” he says . “That is s im i la r to the
phi losophy of the Kol le l . Out reach is so impor tant. That ’s what we l i ke so much about the Kol le l . I t ’s not just 10 rabbis studying , I t ’s rabbis and thei r fami l ies , and thei r par t icipants engaging in the communit y, reaching out, br ing ing people in , bui ld ing communit y, in addit ion to host ing classes , Discovery weekends , communit y seders and celebrat ions .
The Seat t le Kol le l is fa r more than one synagogue or another, El ie says .
“To us, it’s a cross-section of the community. Its’ purpose is to make Jews more aware of their backgrounds, of who they are and who they can be. “That’s what Rabbi David and the Seattle Kollel have done for Seattle for a quarter century and that’s why our family is so glad to be able to support and be part of it. “

We are delighted to express our congratulations to these two outstanding members of our community.
You have graciously shared the gifts of Torah and mitzvot, we are pleased that the community now wants to bestow merit upon you. May you go from strength to strength.

A beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and the Samis Foundation
June 5, 2012 15 Sivan 5772 Dear Friends: The Mishcan – the Tabernacle of the wilderness – was constructed from materials contributed by Bnai Yisrael. When Moshe announced the campaign to collect the materials required to fabricate the Mishcan, the princes of the tribes of Bnai Yisrael immediately and graciously offered to guarantee the adequacy of the supply of materials. The people contributed generously. Their donations exceeded the requirements. As a result, little opportunity remained for the princes to contribute. This disappointment prompted the princes to approach Moshe and propose that they provide the Mishcan’s inaugural offerings. Our Sages are critical of the princes’ guarantee. This is difficult to understand. True, the princes were not called upon to act on their guarantee. However, the generosity of the people does not detract from the immense graciousness of the princes! Our Sages are imparting an important lesson about the responsibilities of leadership. An effective leader assumes responsibility for projects and outcomes. This aspect of leadership was clearly embodied by the princes. They assumed absolute responsibility for the assembly of materials adequate to fabricate the Mishcan. However, a leader must also lead by demonstrating proper behaviors and attitudes. He must, very literally, lead the people by acting before others and thereby, setting the example. This aspect of leadership was not present in the princes’ offer. They did not provide the first contributions to set an example for the nation. Elie and Miriam Levy embody both aspects of leadership delineated by our Sages. They accept upon themselves responsibility for completion of the projects that they undertake. They also lead by example. They are among the first to speak up, to act, and contribute to so many important projects and programs. They are excellent and deserving honorees. Mazal tov to Elie and Miriam. Congratulations to Rabbi David, the Kollel faculty, and the Kollel’s lay and professional supporters on the occasion of the annual gala. Sincerely,

To whom it may concern,
It is a pleasure and an honor to celebrate the 21st annual gala dinner with Rabbi Avraham David and the dedicated staff of the Seattle Kollel. For nearly a quarter of a century, theKollel has served as an invaluable resource for our community by offering an array of programs designed to educate and inspire Jews from a wide range of backgrounds and affiliations.
I can think of no better way to celebrate the Kollel’s continued achievements than by honor-ing Dr. Elie and Miriam Levy, who have done so much to elevate the quality of Jewish life here in Seattle. The Levys truly exemplify everything that the Kollel stands for, which is why we wish them and the Kollel much brocha and hatzlacha in all their endeavors for many years to come.
Sincerely,

We couldn’t be more pleased to see the Kollel honoring such amazing members of our community as Elie and Miriam Levy. Not only do they learn Torah and support the learning of Torah, they live Torah as well. The Seattle Kollel is a unique Kollel in that its members also fulfill multiple roles. They learn, they teach, and they also live Torah. Jewish outreach is close to our hearts at Seattle NCSY, and we are proud to be partners with the Kollel in this endeavor. Rabbi David and the Kollel have been endlessly supportive of NCSY programs, providing essential services to our youth. The future of the Seattle Jewish community is reliant on self-less, generous individuals who understand the important role of institutions such as the Kollel. Elie and Miriam are not just generous, they are also involved. They both have a vi-sion for themselves, for their children, and for their commu-nity, and they do the work to make it happen. Thank you, Levy family and the Kollel, for continuing to bring Torah to the masses. Chazak U’Baruch, Ari and Jessica Hoffman, Directors, Seattle NCSY

We take this opportunity to thank Rosh Kollel Rabbi Avrohom David and the other Rabbis, staff, and family members at the Seattle Kollel for your tireless efforts. You have truly lived up to the motto “Jewish learning for every level.”
The Seattle Kollel, through dedication to the study of Torah, has demonstrably impacted Jewish life and learning throughout the Pacific Northwest. All of us at Congregation Shevet Achim wish a hearty yasher koach to this year’s honorees, Dr. Elie and Miriam Levy.
We wish the Seattle Kollel continued success in this most holy of endeavors.
