This presentation is a collection of the works that have been made throughout this
semester. With no exact ideas in mind about what I wanted to do for my thesis
project, I was lucky enough to have the idea come to me while working on the first
initial projects. Each project that was made led me closer and closer to what I knew
I wanted to do. With all of the student/teacher feedback, user testing, prototypes
and research, I was able to start a thesis project that I am proud of and has gotten
good feedback from the viewers.
Domain Map
The domain map was done
in order to show our interests in order to show our interests
and find ways to connect that
to Thesis. This design was done
to show my four interests, and
to see how they relate to one
another. A word list was
created for each interest. The created for each interest. The
words that are used multiple
times are overlapped. I found
that the words that were used
the most were color, patterns
and outdoors. The next step
was to see what I could do
with all of those words.with all of those words.
5x5 Projects
The 5x5 project was about doing five projects in five
days. We were to spend one day on each project. I
chose to explore the ways people see things. A child
notices different things than an adult would, and the
same goes from adult to adult. I notice I pattern in
every thing that I see, whereas another person might
notice the colors, etc. This was the first time I started to
realize what I wanted to do for my thesis project. The realize what I wanted to do for my thesis project. The
kids, adults and I were given a series of photographs
(we all saw the same images) and we were to create
a work based off of what we notice first, or see.
(These were the 5 photographs that were used for testing
throughout the whole process)
After making the domain map and completing the 5x5 project, I got a lot of great
feedback which led me to the next steps in my thesis project. People were drawn to
the abstract way that I see the photographs. They had the most reactions to the visual
perceptions that were done with the marker and watercolor. From the feedback, my
next step was to create more and find ways to put them to use.
The first prototypes of the patterns, wallpapers and fabrics were presented to a number
of people, including my thesis class and professor. The reaction was really positive and
people gave me excellent feedback. They loved the idea of nature being turned into
patterns and then brought into the home for decor. Everyone suggested to keep working
and creating more, and also to look at other interior design/textiles that could help me
find inspiration and to learn. I also got a few recommendations of products to make,
which included more than just items for the home.
After the first prototypes, I was inspired to create more patterns and look into other After the first prototypes, I was inspired to create more patterns and look into other
products to make. I researched many other designers who use nature as their inspiration.
I also looked at interior design and learned about how to decorate, and studied the
forms of different furniture for the home.
The pattern was turned into a wallpaper and put in my bedroom.
The idea of Feng Shui starts to also play a role in this example. After
researching Feng Shui, the pattern made perfect sense to test out.
The bedroom is a room that one spends a lot of time, and a place
that should be relaxing and peaceful. The shades of blue represent
the calm, peaceful and pure feelings that the room should have. the calm, peaceful and pure feelings that the room should have.
Water also plays a big role in Feng Shui. It represents ease and
freshness. The wallpaper is placed on the North side of the room
because water is an element of the North.
“A harmonious Feng Shui Water Element will bring a refreshing energy
of calm, ease, purity and freshness. Water is also the ancient symbol
of abundance, thus a potent feng shui cure.”
Self-Reflection
When thesis first started in August, I was unsure of what I wanted to do. Doing the domain
map and beginning projects got me thinking about my interests and passions. From that I knew
I wanted to work with nature, and study the natural patterns within it. I wouldn’t be where I am
today without the process of my thesis class, and all of the practice that I did. I enjoyed how
one project led to another, and each time got me closer and closer to my end result. The
biggest challenge was figuring out what I wanted to do. Once that was decided, it was all a biggest challenge was figuring out what I wanted to do. Once that was decided, it was all a
matter of trial and error, and user testing. It is important to see others reactions and hear their
advice. I have learned that I like to step away from the computer sometimes and make things
with my hands. The interesting and nice thing about this project is that I get a mix of both; I
create the artwork by hand, and then use the computer to make different patterns with it. In
terms of the next steps, it is important to keep creating, researching and sharing my work with
other people to get advice. After the last critique, I am leaning towards focusing on making
different collections of patterns inspired by different places and cultures. I will research each different collections of patterns inspired by different places and cultures. I will research each
collection theme and make patterns that represent them correctly.
Inspiration/Research/Precedents
The following pages include other companies and brands that related to my project in
some way. Looking at other designers, artists and home interiors helped me shape the
way that I make my patterns. I wanted to make sure that my patterns stood out from the
others and are unique. There is also books that were used for research about color
theory, patterns in nature and feng shui.
