A NEW INNOVATION DISTRICT COLIN SINCLAIR

CEO LIVERPOOL KNOWLEDGE QUARTER

WHAT IS THE LIVERPOOL KNOWLEDGE QUARTER?

WHO IS IT?

UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL LIVERPOOL JOHN MOORES UNIVERSITY

SCHOOL OF TROPICAL MEDICINE ROYAL LIVERPOOL & BROADGREEN NHS

LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHARING INFORMATION AND DOING THINGS TOGETHER..

‣ Meeting people ‣ Listening ‣ Learning

‣ Recruiting a new, small, but perfectly formed, team

‣ Finding out things that surprise me (mostly in a nice way)

‣ Loving being on and around Hope Street and "the hill"

‣ Coming here to listen and learn from all of you

MY FIRST TEN DAYS

‣ I could see the unique opportunity that Liverpool has to reestablish itself as a global city

‣ The reality in so many ways already exceeds the external perception

‣ People already know how good Manchester is. Government and the media recognise the success and future potential of MSP, Citylabs, Alderley Park

‣ Liverpool, apart from the Waterfront and Liverpool One, though is still very much an unknown. A challenge and an opportunity.

‣ The role offers the perfect mix of regeneration, development, place making, innovation, inward investment, marketing and PR.

SO, WHY DID I TAKE THE JOB?

SO WHAT WILL I ACTUALLY BE DOING..?

THE PRIORITIES

▸ Establishing the Knowledge Quarter as one of Europe's leading innovation districts, an even better place to live, work, learn, invest and play

▸ Deciding what to call it, setting or not setting hard boundaries, devising a place making strategy, with a marketing and PR plan, including a website and a social media strategy.

▸ Working on transport connectivity, thinking about the public realm, signage and wayfinding - connecting and animating spaces. Places where people can meet, interact, think and talk

▸ Looking at the enterprise zone status, the existing and potential portfolio of sites and the need or not for a Knowledge Quarter Development Corporation. Getting the right mix of academic, clinical, cultural, business, retail, indie retail, leisure, living and working space.

WHAT ARE WE GOOD AT? WHAT CAN WE BE WORLD
