Science Academies Lecture Workshop on Recent Trends in Machine Learning, 9-11 February, 2016
Brief Report Department of Computer science, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Peelamedu,
Coimbatore – 641 004,organised a three day Lecture Workshop on “ Recent Trends in
Machine Learning” with the financial support by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore,
Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and the National Academy of Sciences,
Allahabad, India during 9-11 Feb, 2016.
This lecture workshop was conducted to provide a vibrant forum for the participants to
acquire knowledge in machine learning approaches and to explore latest trends, tools and
methodologies, and challenges involved in machine learning research.
The three day programme commenced with inaugural session, presided by Dr. N. Yesodha
Devi , Secretary, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore and inaugurated by
Padma Sree Prof. B. L. Deekshatulu. In the inaugural address he gave a brief note on the
activities of science academies and presented the importance of machine learning and its
applications in current scenario. Dr. S. Nirmala, Principal, PSGR Krishnammal College for
Women, Coimbatore thanked the dignitaries, Science academies for their motivation and
financial support rendered, the session speakers, participants and all the stakeholders
involved in the conduct of the workshop.
Around 118 persons were participated from various colleges in and around Coimbatore. Out
of 118 participants, 19 were Faculty, 72 were Research Scholars, and 27 were PG students .
The first day technical sessions started with the first lecture on the topic “Machine
Learning with Decision Trees” by Padma Sree Prof. B. L. Deekshatulu, Chairman, Board
of Governance, College of Engineering, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University,
Hyderabad. In his talk he dealt with the importance of decision trees and its influence in
making decisions by machine. He also presented the applications and issues in Decision
trees learning.
The second lecture on “Probabilistic methods in Image Processing” was presented by Dr.
R. Krishnan Former Director ADRIN / Former Dean, IIS, Adjunct Faculty, Amrita
University and PG Professor, Department of ECE, CIET, Coimbatore. He highlighted the
linear and non-linear diffusion processes in image processing to do deep structure
analysis, finding more relevant fields for multi-scale segmentation. He also explained the
concept of snakes in image processing.
On the afternoon of the first day, the third lecture was delivered by Dr. A. Chitra, PSG
College of Technology, Coimbatore. She gave a talk on “Computational Intelligence –
Trends and Research Ideas”. She presented an overview of computational intelligence,
components of AI and the approaches of machine learning and also highlighted the
research issues.
Due to academic and administrative reasons, Dr. A. Chitra who was supposed to give her
second talk could not continue. Hence the fourth lecture of the workshop was managed
by Mrs. Sathiyavikashini, Ph.D research scholar of our institution. She presented her talk
on “Machine learning in Python” and demonstration was given on machine learning
techniques using open source tool -SCIKIT learn. In this session, installation of SCIKIT
learn for windows and different machine learning techniques was demonstrated.
On the forenoon of the second day, the fifth lecture was delivered by Dr. Bhabatosh
Chanda, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. He gave a talk on “Image inpainting”. He
discussed about various types of degradation, importance of inpainting, different
algorithms used in inpainting, texture synthesis techniques for reconstruction of images,
interactive inpainting, and also discussed the research related issues in inpainting.
The next lecture was also continued by him on the title “Image Super Resolution”. He
highlighted the importance of computer vision, reconstruction of 2D and 3D images,
Machine learning techniques in Computer vision, different approaches on super
resolution process, and also presented the pros and cons in super resolution related
techniques.
In the afternoon session of the second day, two lectures were delivered by Dr. K. P.
Soman, Amrita University, Coimbatore. In his first lecture, he talked on “Deep
Learning” and highlighted the new developments, milestones achieved in deep learning.
He presented the challenges and real time issues in self-driving car and the role of deep
learning in autonomous cars. In addition, he discussed the usage of deep learning in
NLP, and other applications.
Dr. Soman, in his second lecture, gave the demonstration on “TensorFlow for Deep
Learning” with sample real time applications.
In the forenoon of 11.02.2016, the eighth lecture of the workshop was delivered by Dr. G.
Sudha Sadasivam, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore on the topic “Machine
Learning on Hadoop Framework”. She discussed the importance of big data in the current
scenario and explained the usage of Hadoop -Map Reduce programming for analyzing
simple applications. She also demonstrated several real time problems using map reduce
programming.
She continued her talk on the topic “Machine Learning and Mahout – Case studies. In
this session, she demonstrated mahout and presented several case studies like
recommendation systems, genome clustering, approaches used for machine learning
techniques like Support Vector Machine, K-Means and also discussed the challenges in
Big data.
On the afternoon, the tenth lecture of the workshop was handled by Dr. M. S. Vijaya,
PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore on “Machine Learning using R”.
She explained the features of R programming, packages available in R for data analysis
and also discussed and demonstrated various machine learning techniques for
classification, prediction and clustering with simple applications.
The workshop provided insights in the concepts, tools and techniques in machine
learning. Some of the open research directions discussed in this workshop are deep
learning, image restoration / inpainting, machine learning with hadoop, Probabilistic
models in image processing, Computational intelligence, Machine learning using python
and R. This workshop triggered interest among participants to focus their research in
machine learning.
The third day ended with the valedictory session. Dr. R. Krishnan, co-convenor of the
programme delivered the valediction address. Dr. S. Nirmala, Principal, PSGR
Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore presided the valediction. The feedback
was obtained from the participants during valediction and it was positive and
encouraging. Dr. M. S. Vijaya, co-ordinator of the programme, extended her gratitude to
science academies for their financial support rendered, the invited speakers, all the
stakeholders of the workshop for their support.
