Scholarships…The Tips
❖ Organization● Do your resume and personal essay early. Complete it by
December 15th. Update your resume as you receive additional awards, honors or complete additional community service.
● If you have a lot of scholarships to apply for, organize them by deadline dates and complete them in that order. Do not expect scholarship organizations to accept your application after their deadline date. It is your responsibility to manage your time so that you can complete the application and collect the necessary attachments. Use a calendar and write the titles of the scholarships you intend to apply for on the dates that you should mail them or return them to the designated person, not on the date that they are due.
● Punctuality, as well as following instructions, is part of the criteria by which your application is evaluated.
● Check your mailbox frequently. Specific scholarships will be placed in your box as well as scholarship update lists.
● Don’t procrastinate – Start applying for scholarships early so that you do not feel overwhelmed in March.
❖ Applications● Neatness – Everything about your scholarship tells the people
awarding it something about you. Presentation is everything. This is a highly competitive market and neatness is the easiest part of your application to control!
● Focus – Don’t just have one form letter that you use. Identify each scholarship for its focus whether it is athletic, leadership, service, activities or financial need.
● Voice – Keep your voice active and use plenty of “sizzle” words. For example: NOT – “It is my intention…” or “There are several
6
dreams I have….” BUT – “My intention is to…” or “My dreams are to…”
● Grammar – Use proper punctuation and capitalization. Remember you are not texting! Don’t use slang or humor. Keep the style formal, respectful and business-like. Make sure you have someone proofread it.
● Sell Yourself – Don’t be shy-talk about your strengths. Include examples to vividly support your statements. Not just “I have been active in my school as a tutor” but “on weekends I go to the home of a struggling elementary school student and help him with his spelling words and math. The reward for this is that he is passing all his classes and looks forward to going to school.”
❖ Recommendations● Get your recommendation letters by December 15th. You will
need four letters of recommendation: 1 from an administrator, 2 from teachers and 1 from a person in the community. Ask people early as this will give them an opportunity to watch you even more than usual and their letter will be more personal and more effective if they have time to think about it.
● Give them your resume so they can include your activities and honors
● Remember to thank those that wrote a letter of recommendation for you. They took time out of their busy schedule to write the letter and you may need their assistance in the future for another recommendation.
❖ Scams● Never pay for scholarship searches● Beware of this type of language: “You’ve been selected.”…
“You’re a finalist.”… “The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.”... “The Scholarship will cost some money.”
