A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF DECONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
What Ihab Hassan has s a i d of c r i t i c i s m in gen- e r a l seems a l s o t r u e of deconstruct ion: there a r e " p a r a c r i t i c s , m e t a c r i t i c s , c r y p t o c r i t i c s , hypocrit- i c s , uncanny c r i t i c s , " and count less o t h e r s who have cont r ibu ted t o the corpus of t h i s new c r i t i - cism (SCER 6 , p. 74). Since 1967, when Jacques Derrida f i r s t publ ished De l a g r a m a t o l o g i e , the number of schola rs using "deconstruc t ive" warrants , with t h e i r own v a r i a t i o n s , has grown a t a phenom- e n a l r a t e . With t h i s s t a t e of a f f a i r s i n mind, I have chosen t o focus t h i s bibliography on e i g h t l i t e r a r y c r i t i c s who have made important contr ibu- t i o n s t o an American "version" of deconstruct ion: Roland Barthes, Paul de Man, Jacques Derr ida, Eugenio Dona t o , Barbara Johnson, J. H i l l i s Mi l le r , Joseph N . Riddel, and William V. Spanos. Their work is a l s o p a r t i c u l a r l y re levan t t o the 1980 MLA sess ion of t h e Society f o r C r i t i c a l Exchange. In a d d i t i o n , I have included a l imi ted s e l e c t i o n of reviews, a r t i c l e s , and books by schola rs who have commented on, c r i t i q u e d , o r challenged t h e i r work.
Each of these c r i t i c s , except perhaps Jacques Derrida and Barbara Johnson, has s h i f t e d from ad- vocat ing the t r a d i t i o n of "presence" t o endorse t h a t of "difference" sometime i n mid-career . Therefore I have l i s t e d only t h e i r work a f t e r such a t r a n s i t i o n . In France, l i t e r a r y c r i t i c s began t o turn t o the deconstruct ive mode i n the mid- 1960s, most notably i n the c o l l e c t i v e e f f o r t The'orie d'ensemble, which appeared i n 1968 with a r t i c l e s by Barthes, Derr ida, and other important Te l Quel c r i t i c s . s t a r t i n g po in t of Bar thes ' s preoccupation with the no t ions of deconstruct ion; h i s f i r s t book explor ing those ideas was =, published i n 1970. Der r ida ' s seminal work in deconstruct ion began a s e a r l y a s 1963, i n a r t i c l e s which would l a t e r be published in De l a grammatologie (1967) and L 'Ecr i tu re e t l a d i f f i r e n c e (1 967) .
On t h e American f r o n t , most c r i t i c s turned to deconstruct ion in the e a r l y 1970s. J. H i l l i s Mil ler changed camps from Geneva School phenomen- ology t o t h a t of French deconstruct ion in 1970; Paul de Man moved t o deconstruct ion i n about 1969 or 1970, although I have included some of h i s e a r l i e r essays t h a t appeared l a t e r in Blindness and Ins igh t (1971). Barbara Johnson, who s tud ied with de Man from 1973 t o 1977, has used a deconstruct ive o r i e n t a t i o n i n n e a r l y a l l her work. Eugenio Donato and Joseph Riddel made t h e i r t r a n s i t i o n t o decon- s t r u c t i v e approaches in 1969-70; William Spanos made h i s i n 1973-74. Spanos' work is a l l i e d in s i g n i f i c a n t ways with t h e "deconstructive" ap- proaches of Derrida and the Yale School (de Man, Johnson, M i l l e r ) , b u t he is c a r e f u l t o p a i n t out t h a t a s a "de-structive" a c t i v i t y , in the Heideg- gerian sense of the word, h i s approach is substan- t i a l l y d i f f e r e n t . H e o u t l i ~ l e s t h a t distinction in h i s p re face t o Martin Heidegger and t h e Question of L i t e r a t u r e (1979).
This is a s e l e c t e d bibliography. It amits a nllmber of important f i g u r e s who have e i t h e r i n f l u - enced o r con t r ibu ted t o deconstruct ion. Few r e f e r - ences a r e made t o s i g n i f i c a n t fo re runners l i k e Nietzsche , Saussure , Freud, Heidegger , or ~ 6 v i - S t rauss . Only a handful of e n t r i e s mention krcan, Foucault, Kris teva, Deleuze, Bloom, or Hartman; the same is t rue of c r i t i c s such a s Lyotard, Kofman, Laccw-Labar the, Nancy, and Spivak. I have organized t h i s bibliography s p e c i f i - c a l l y f o r English-speaking readers . Bar thes ' s and
Der r ida ' s work is l i s t e d chronological ly by the appearance of t h e English t r a n s l a t i o n s , with the o r i g i n a l publ ica t ion information l i s t e d af terwards; un t rans la ted p ieces a r e en te red separa te ly with f u l l b ib l iographic d a t a . The bibliography is divided i n t o two p a r t s : (I) the e i g h t c r i t i c s ' work, and (11) s e l e c t e d c r i t i q u e s and commentaries. Most of t h e commentaries a r e i n English, a l though I have a l s o included a number of French essays , mostly on Barthes and Derrida. References t o
