Limitations when wearing SCBA
Limited visibility Decreased ability to communicate Increased weight Decreased mobility
Types of breathing apparatus
Open Circuit– Most common in fire service– Uses compressed air– Exhaled air is vented outside
Closed Circuit– Uses compressed or liquid Oxygen– Exhaled air is processed through a “rebreather”– 30 min – 4 hours

Air Cylinder Assembly
Low pressure 2216 psi 45cf air– 30 min
Low pressure 3000 psi 66cf air– 45 min
High pressure 4500 psi 45cf air– 30 min
High pressure 4500 psi 88 or 90cf air– 45 min
Regulator Assembly
Reduces pressure from tank Bypass valve Remote pressure gauges
– Should be within 100 psi of tank gauge

Weekly Inspections of SCBA per NFPA 1404 and 1500
