RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE
The ‘Human Genome Project’ was completed in 2000, and some scientists went so far as to dub race a “biological fiction”. We discovered
that most humans are 99.9 per cent genetically identical — that, in fact, there are greater differences between two frogs in a pond than between
any two people who find themselves waiting for a bus. In truth hardly a hair of code separates us.
But five years later, teams are panning for gene types to help explain
why West Africa produces the fastest runners in the world, or what gene types account for skin colours, or why European Jews seem so
smart. The notions of inherent intellectual or other superiorities is a dangerous one (as we read in our Torah portion this morning). This truth
is that intelligence has never been a particularly good predictor of success. Intelligence is not a guarantee of a good life, good choices,
meaningful behaviour or moral relevance.
If anything, intelligence is a seducer. It leads people to think they can be above such trivialities. So the charge of our Jewish culture has never
been intelligence, but something very different. In commanding us, the commandment of these fringes we wear on our Tallitot – we are told;
And it shall be unto you for a fringe…to remember all the
commandments of the L-RD, and do them; and that you don’t run astray your own heart and after your own eyes…
This is what we demand from ourselves – memory, not intellect. To
remember, not to reason but remember with humility the demands that a good life calls us to. Knowledge and intelligence and great gifts we are
given and earn, but they are no replacement for goodness.
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich

A synagogue is a house of G-d, a place to feel G-d's presence, worship and join a community in prayer. Behavior in a synagogue should be appropriately respectful.
The synagogue may be one of the last remaining sanctuaries to escape cell phones and beepers. They should be turned off before entering.
Applause is not appropriate. Photography is not permitted. When the Ark is open, do not leave or enter the sanctuary.
Thank you.
