The Sanson y Montinola Mansion, better known as the Antillan House in Jaro isone of the very few such mansions that has been left intact.

The home was built at the turn of the 20th century by Don Gregorio Montinola yLozada and his spouse Doña Matilde Jalandoni y Habana.

The homes lower level served as the vestibule area for the main entrance.The upper floor accommodated the various living spaces, to take advantage ofthe huge windows throughout that floor.

The house is modelled after similar homes that were being built at about thesame time in the Caribbean. Hence, the naming of the property: “The AntillanHouse”.

At the deaths of Don Gregorio and Dona Matilde the property was willed toAlfredo Araneta Sanson and Matilde Jalandoni Montinola de Sanson, who inturn bequethed it to their four sons. Three of the brothers decided to split theproperty. Gregorio, the eldest elected to retain ancestral home. He and his wifeMarilou Tirol currently own and manage the home and remaining property.

The family owned, massive amounts ofland as can be seen from the DalanCommission Civil as far as where thepresent day SM City is located.

It is said that: “the land where Colegiode San Jose is was a donation fromthe family; the land at the back of theproperty where the SM Hypermarket islocated and as far as DalanCommission Civil and at the front ofthe home the land extends up to whereSM City Iloilo is located. You can onlyimagine, the mansion sitting as an"island in the middle of a sea ofgreenery."

When you approach the home downthe narrow driveway, you are struck bythe palette of colours that have beenused on the home.

Apparently, the current ownersspent a very large amount of moneyon an analysis of the paints usedon the original building. Theywanted to ensure that when theyrepainted that the colours and tintsused would precisely replicate theoriginals.

The ground floor is built withbricks while the upper floor ismade of wood.

The building is striking because of itsextensive use of columns on both levels. Ihesitate to say that it appears to be builtin the neo-classical style(?)

This area is a very large garage and receiving area. At theoutset it may have been the carriage house and even perhapsthe stables. Above the garage area, on the second level is anopen patio with a covered area. The next level is an enclosedon which apparently may be used as a dining area. Access tothe rooftop open patio is by a small metal spiral stairway.
