Whenever you are looking for a broad product range and reliable service, make Sandvik your first choice. Look inside to find out more…
The company’s founder, Göran Fredrik Göransson (1819–1900), was the first in the world to succeed in using and commercializing the Bessemer furnace method of steel production on an industrial scale.
At the time his motivation was to produce a cleaner, more refined steel that would solve performance issues of products then in high demand. Products such as fine wire for fishing hooks and saw blades that would stay sharp longer. The benefits enjoyed by his customers ensured an ever-increasing demand, and Sandvik became part of the industrial community that established the term “Quality Swedish Steels” - which has been part of the English vocabulary now for one and a half centuries. The same guiding principle has been entrenched in the Sandvikorganization ever since. Research and understand customers’ needs, be innovative and inclusive of new ideas and processes, and share the benefits in a fair way. The recipe has stood firm, and is still relevant. The world is a battleground of commercial endeavour. Australia is in a constant struggle to retain local manufacturing and fabrication. Innovation is still the key to
establishing niche processes and technologies, which we must fight to retain. Sandvik has progressed a long way from fishing hooks and saws. Today, Sandvik’s world encompasses partnering to develop solutions for existing energy sectors, new “green” technologies, developing and producing specialized products for a host of consumer items utilized daily, as well as industrial applications and medical implants. Sandvik has in excess of 600 stainless steel grades within its production capabilities. Many of these were developed in cooperation with customers who needed a specific solution to a problem, or had foreseen an opportunity in the market.

Typical applications
Austenitic stainless steelsThese steels have a wide range of applications in piping, heat ex-changers, hydraulic systems and other equipment for the chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper and food processing industries. The Mo-alloyed grades have higher resistance to general corrosion in non-oxidising acids and to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Ti- and Nb-alloyed grades have good strength at high tempera-tures.
Sandvik 3R60 U.G. is used for high pressure pipe for the urea industry.
Sandvik 3R68 has improved corrosion resistance compared to 316L and 317L and is often used for heat exchanger tubing.
Duplex stainless steelsConsiderably higher strength and lower thermal expansion com-pared with austenitic grades. Very high corrosion resistance in chloride-containing solutions and weak organic acids. Sandvik SAF 2507 has superior corrosion resistance in seawater. Used for o-shore oil and gas exploration and heat exchangers. Duplex steels have a maximum service temperature of 250−300°C.
High-alloy austenitic stainless steels and nickel alloysSandvik 2RK65 − Phosphoric and sulphuric acid, chloride bearing environments, refineries and petrochemical plants.
Sandvik Sanicro 28 − Very good resistance to all kinds of cor-rosion. Wide range of applications including oil and gas industry, excellent performance in phosphoric acid.
Sandvik 2RE10 − Strongly oxidising acids, e.g. nitric acid.Sandvik 2RE69 − Fertilizer industry, urea strippers. Superior to
Sandvik 3R60 U.G.Sandvik 254 SMO − Higher strength, very good resistance to
pitting corrosion in seawater and brackish water.Sandvik Sanicro 30 − Nuclear PWR steam generators.Sandvik Sanicro 41 − Refinery applications, (superheater tubes),
very good resistance to stress corrosion cracking in basic and acid environments.
Sandvik Sanicro 69 − Nuclear PWR steam generator.

COMPOSITE TUBES – SEAMLESS TUBES
Composite tubes
Composite tube (coextruded tube) is suitable for applications where the conditions outside and inside the tube require material properties that cannot be met by one material only.
The composite tube consists of two dierent alloys metallurgically bonded together to achieve good thermal transfer properties. One alloy is used to withstand corrosion, while the other is often an approved pressure vessel material.

MASS AND AREA OF STAINLESS STEEL BAR – HOLLOW BAR
Mass and area of stainless steel barUseful formulas.Mass of stainless steel bar in kg/m
Round bar*: p (r)2 x 0.008 (r = radius in mm)eg 50 mm round bar = 3.1416 (25)2 x 0.008 = 15.71 kg/m
* For round bar – double the size = 4 x the mass,e.g. 100 mm round bar = mass of 50 mm round x 4 = 15.71 x 4 = 62.84 kg/mNote: Based on a mean density of 8,000 kg/cubic metre

SANDVIK COUPLING-L
EconomyA correct cost comparison between a techni-cal solution using a Sandvik Coupling-L and one with a conventional flange joint should consider not only the product cost. The func-tional cost concept is much more important.
Bear in mind the following advantages with Sandvik Coupling-L.
Low weight.Rapid opening/closing,with savings in labour costs.Requires less space thanstandard flange joints. An alternative to a number of dierent flanges, which enablesyou to minimize your stocks for repair/maintenance purposes.
The price you pay for Sandvik Coupling-L includes nuts, bolts and gasket. The price paid for a flange normally doesn’t. All these facts should also be included in a total cost com-parison.

GasketsBesides resistance to temperature and chemicals there are two more functions that decide the sealing capacity of a gasket, namely, elasticity and plasticity. Sandvik Coupling-L can be sup-plied with 3 dierent types of massive O-rings, all providing a complete tightness.
FCLG-N NitrilRubber gaskets, maximum temperature 100 °C, an inexpensivegasket with good elasticity.
FCLG-V VitonRubber gaskets, maximum temperature 150 °C, lead cured Viton grade. We stock sizes 26.9–205.
FCLG-T PTFEPTFE gaskets, maximum temperature 260 °C, can be used in almost any medium. Note – PTFE gasket may have to be replaced when the pipeline is used after a temperature drop. The gasket will be tight again when previous temperature is reached again. PTFE should be used only at constant temperature level, max. 260 °C. Temperature variations might cause leakage due to the dierent heat expansion of PTFE and steel.
