Mental Math Strategy:

I can use doubles when I

add 2 of the same number.

4 + 4

4 + 4 is the

number of

wheels on 2

cars.

“Doubles Plus One” Hunt

How many doubles plus one equations can you find on the grid below? Shade

in the 2 numbers that form the equation and write it along with the sum in

the box at the bottom of the page. Two examples have been done for you.

3 5 1 2 6 8 9 0

2 9 7 5 3 4 0 1

5 8 10 1 1 4 2 2

0 6 5 5 2 2 3 6

8 4 2 3 0 5 9 7

0 10 7 6 3 4 7 7

5 6 4 1 1 7 9 8

1 5 3 6 3 6 2 0

Doubles Plus One “I Have Who Has?”

This game is for eleven players. Below is a description of how to play:

Pass one card to each student.

The student who has the “START” card begins by reading her card

aloud, for example “Who has the sum of 4 and 5?”

The person who has the “I have 9” card responds by reading his card

aloud.

This continues until the last card has been read.

Tips:

Ask students to stand at the beginning of the activity. Once a

student has read her card, she may sit down. This makes it easier to

see how many people are left.

Because most classes have more than eleven students, you may wish to

split the class into groups of eleven and have the groups try to get

the fastest time.

How Many More?

Look at the number on the leaf. Cut and glue a ladybug that can be

added to the leaf to make 10.

Multiples of 10 Dice Roll

Roll a die. Write the number in the “Addend (Dice Roll)” column.

Look at the sum that you are trying to make. Fill in the missing

addend in the first column.

Addend Plus Addend (Dice Roll)

Equals Sum

+ = 40

+ = 70

+ = 20

+ = 30

+ = 90

+ = 80

+ = 100

+ = 50

+ = 60

+ = 20

+ = 40

+ = 80

Step 1: roll a die and write the number

Step 2: fill in the addend

to make the sum

Adding 2-Digit Numbers

“Front End Addition” means that you add the tens first and then the

ones.

32 + 46

Example:

Step 1 - Add the tens: 30 + 40 = 70

Step 2 – Add the ones: 2 + 6 = 8

Step 3 – Add the tens and ones together: 70 + 8 = 78

So, 32 + 46 = 78

Now it’s your turn!

21 + 35 Add the tens: _____ + _____ = _____

Add the ones: _____ + _____ = _____

Add the tens and ones together: _____ + _____ = _____

So, 21 + 35 = _____

73 + 14 Add the tens: _____ + _____ = _____

Add the ones: _____ + _____ = _____

Add the tens and ones together: _____ + _____ = _____

So, 73 + 14 = _____
