ALTARED CONSCIOUSNESS – “Altered states of consciousness” is an expression we use occasionally. Our mental states may be altered by: foods, moods, drugs, chemicals, hormones,
music, the Phillies, the weather, etc. and this year in particular by the Covid-19 Pandemic and its restrictions. Our coming to the Altar each Sunday, however, is intended to effect an altered state of soul so that we see, judge and act as the Lord sees, judges and acts. Our being “in the Lord”, our Holy Communion with and in Him, have the express purpose of transfiguring our perspectives, judgments and actions. As we say in each Mass: “Taught by our Savior’s command and formed by Divine Teaching we dare to pray, “Our Father...” To resist rigid, harsh and knee-jerk polarizations in our culture can be a bit daunting and even daring.
ST. DOMINIC – This Saturday (Aug. 8) we will commemorate Dominic de Guzman (d.1221). Struck by clerical corruption and by the pastoral neglect of ordinary people, Dominic was transfigured, put in motion, by grace.
He adopted a simple lifestyle, even to the extent of walking barefoot from place to place as he and his companions preached and taught. Hundreds of year later, his graced transfiguration continues in the Order of Preachers (nicknamed the Dominicans).
PARISH PROTOCOLS & ETTIQUETTE
Thank you for your good spirit and cooperation as we continue to navigate the uncharted waters of the Covid-19 pandemic. As we resume our 7:30 AM Sunday Mass this week, please take note that we are still asking you to reserve your seat (s) for a given Mass. In this way we can both protect the health of our parishioners and also avoid turning worshippers away when they arrive for Mass on Sunday. So far we have not had to turn any worshipper away, but if we reach our chapel’s safe seating capacity it will be better (I think) to have informed people beforehand so that they can deal with that week’s disappointment before arriving at chapel for Mass on Sunday. UPDATE ABOUT SEATING CAPACITY – As we continue to navigate the uncharted waters of the Covid-19 Pandemic we are learning that we can probably
ENCOUNTERING THE OTHER – We all live within some sort of bubble. This is developmentally necessary because we need to have boundaries, we need borders; we need to know where we begin and where we end. That said, it is also good to realize that there is life outside of our individual or family, tribal, cultural or racial bubble. Yesterday (Aug. 1) was the twenty-
fourth anniversary of the assassination in Algeria of Bishop Pierre Claverie who wrote about his own experience of coming to see the limits of having lived within a colonial bubble and then did the work to come to know the other’s language, culture and experience of life. I think his life and message are timely for us in the USA. For more on his life and message visit the Pastor’s Portion of our parish homepage: https://churchofsaintann.org/ At that same location you will find some writings in the same vein from the Trappist Martyrs of Tibhirine https://churchofsaintann.org/ whose story was presented in the film Of Gods and Men (2011). May 8th is the annual feast day of Blessed Pierre Claverie and Companions who were martyred in Algeria in 1996.
TRANSFIGURATION - Each year we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord on August 6 (this Thursday). Why August 6th? Remembering that the number forty pops with associations in Sacred Scripture (see the Pastor’s Portion of our homepage) https://
churchofsaintann.org/, it’s helpful to remember that August 6 is forty days before September 14 when we will celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. For us, “Glory” (Transfiguration) is always connected with and can never be separated from the Cross.
TRANSFIGURED CONSCIOUSNESS – I was stuck some years ago when one of our parishioners said that the reason she and her
husband were raising her children in the faith was so that their daughters and sons might have an “alternate perspective” to the culturally dominant, pervasive, loud and harsh perspectives of “red state v. blue state”, “liberal v. conservative”, “us who are all right v. them who are all wrong”.
