Guest Column: From Father Diego
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
As a child I was a dreamer, and I liked big challenges.
Around my family those challenges became spiritual
ideals, especially through my mother, the one who
introduced me into the world of God and the Holy
Church.
My name is Diego Arce. I am originally from
Colombia. I am the seventh of eight siblings. I was
born in a very Catholic family where the principles of
the Church have been the basis of our lives. The Holy
rosary in the family, the reading of Sacred Scripture
and the Eucharist have been spiritual force that have
kept us united even though we are not physically
together.
My journey toward priesthood started when I was a
child. My happiest day was Sunday, because that day
I went to the church with my mother.
Indeed, it was at age twenty when I took the
priesthood seriously in my life, that is how I decided
to leave my family, friends and work to move towards
being part of those God called. I began my journey in
a Franciscan community where I stayed for four years.
At that point I just wanted to serve as a brother. Since
that Religious Community was the Franciscans of the
Third Order, there was no possibility to become a
priest. However, it was with the help of my Spiritual
Director that I felt the desire to study to become a
priest. So I left the community and began the study of
philosophy at Cristo Sacerdote Seminary in Colombia,
and it was there that I felt the call to serve God in the
Archdioceses of Newark.
I came to the United States in 2013. I started my
English studies at Rutgers University, then moved to
the study of theology at Immaculate Conception
Seminary, Seton Hall University. Now thanks be to
God and for the grace and glory to the priesthood of
our Lord Jesus Christ, I am a priest. Also, I would like
to give thanks to Fr. Joe Chapel for his welcome after
receiving my assignment to begin my ministry here at
St. Andrew’s Church. My gratitude also to all the
parishioners who this weekend made me feel like a
member of the community. As I told you last
weekend, I am here to learn and serve. Thank you for
having your open hearts to say, welcome.
God bless you.

Pope Francis’ Prayer to the Virgin Mary
for Protection and Hope
O, Mary You always shine on our path
as a sign of salvation and of hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,
who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain,
keeping your faith firm.
You, Salvation of the People,
know what we need,
and we are sure you will provide
so that, as in Cana of Galilee,
we may return to joy and to feasting
after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform to the will of the Father
and to do as we are told by Jesus,
who has taken upon himself our sufferings
and carried our sorrows
to lead us, through the cross,
to the joy of the resurrection.
Amen.
Under your protection,
we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of who we are in trial,
but deliver us from every danger,
O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.
TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY
TIME
First Reading: Sirach 27:30—28:7
Sirach advises all to forgive the faults of their
neighbor. Only by forgiving the sins of others, can a
person expect to be forgiven his sins.
Second Reading: Romans 14:7-9
Paul stresses that no one is his own master; we are
responsible to the Lord, and we belong to him in both
life and death.
Gospel: Matthew 18:21-35
This narrative points out the difference between
mercy and justice. When Peter asks how often he
should forgive someone who wrongs him, Jesus
answers, “…not seven times: I say seventy times
seven times.” Jesus then narrates the story of the king
who was merciful to his official by forgiving him all
his debts, but this same official showed no mercy to
his own servant.
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 1ST READING: Is 55:6-9
2ND READING: Phi 1:20c-24, 27a
GOSPEL: Mt 20:1-16a
September 15: Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows
Our mother of sorrows,
With strength from above you stood by the
cross, sharing in the sufferings of Jesus, and
with tender care you bore Him in your arms,
mourning and weeping.
We praise you for your faith, which accepted
the life God planned for you. We praise you for
your hope, which trusted that God would do
great things in you. We praise you for your
love in bearing with Jesus the sorrows of His
passion.
Holy Mary, may we follow your example, and
stand by all your children who need comfort
and love.
Mother of God, stand by us in our trials and
care for us in our many needs. Pray for us now
and at the hour of our death.
Amen. Readings for the Week
You can find these readings on the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops website.

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus tells the story of a king
whose servant owed him a lot of money. The king was
going to punish the servant, but when the man knelt down
and begged for mercy, the king forgave him. Then the
same man went and punished a servant who owed him
money. When the king found out about this he was very
angry. In this story Jesus is telling us that if we want God
to forgive us our sins then we have to forgive the people
who have hurt us.

Which of the following is an example of
a sacramental? (A sacramental is
anything set apart or blessed by the
Church to bring good thoughts and
increased devotion.)
a. Rosary beads
b. Holy water
c. Crucifixes
d. All of the above Last week’s answer:
The stiff, square piece of card, usually
covered with white cloth, used to cover
the Chalice to prevent things from falling
into it is called the Pall.
Sunday’s Readings
1st Reading: Sir 27:30—28:7
2nd Reading: Rom 14:7-9
Gospel: Matthew 18:21-25
Adult Question: Jesus tells us to forgive seventy times seven, which means always and forever. Name a time this past week when you forgave someone. Name, too, a time when you accepted another person’s forgiveness. Child’s Question: Jesus says we should forgive from our heart. When did you ask forgiveness of someone you hurt? How did you feel?
In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that helping others
come back to Him makes God happy. What are
some things you do to put a smile on God’s face?
Send an email to bulletin@standrewcc.com and we
will post the things the children of St. Andrew’s do
to make God smile.
St. Andrew’s donates all expired or badly
bruised fruit to an animal rescue. None of
the fruit we receive for the Food Pantry
goes to waste. That probably puts a smile
on God’s face!
