Recent incidents regarding the photocopying of militaryidentificationcardsandcommonaccesscards(CAC),bycommercialestablishments to verify military affiliation or provide governmentratesforservice,havebeenreported.Personnelare reminded that the photocopyingof USGovernmentIdentification isaviolationofTitle18,USCodePart I,Chapter33,Section701andpunishablebybothfineand/orimprisonment.Many military members, family members and DoD employees areunawareofthis law. Pleasepasstothe lowest leveland includeintrainingforforceprotection,informationsecurityandOPSEC.

FPO COMMENTS: Criminal elements and terrorist organizations place U.S. governmentidentificationsasahighvaluelogisticalelementwhenplanningactsagainsttheU.S.military.Although commercial establishments are not prohibited from asking for military/governmentidentification,manygovernmentpersonneland commercialestablishmentsareunawareof theprohibitiononduplicationofgovernmentidentification. Unfortunately,therearenosafeguardsinplacetoensureagovernment identificationcardwontbecounterfeitedorclonedbasedonaphotocopybyacommercialestablishment.It is recommended thatmilitary/DoDpersonnelprovidea statedrivers licenseorotherformofphotoidentificationtobephotocopiedifanestablishmentinsistsonaphotocopyofthetravelersidentification.*NOTE:Thisdoesnotapply tomedicalestablishments (i.e.doctorsoffice,hospitals,etc)whoareallowedtakeacopyforthepurposeoffilinginsuranceclaims;andothergovernmentagenciesintheperformanceofofficialgovernmentbusiness.
