WELCOME COMMUTER STUDENTS SPRING 2011!
This semester marks the second semester that the Commuter Student Organization has been active on campus. The Commuter Student Organization is concerned with the concerns of commuter students and with what they want to see happen on campus. We strive to make campus more attuned to the concerns of commuters. Many commuter students do not feel part of the WCSU community, our goal is to more fully incorporate commuters into campus life. Our goal
is to connect commuter students to campus activities and events, as well as to host our own events catering to
commuters. As you begin a new semester at WCSU, wheth-er this is your first semes-ter or you are a returning
student, we encourage you to get involved in campus clubs and take part in campus activities. Being actively involved on campus is key to getting the most out of your college experi-ence. The Commuter Student Organization is busy organizing events for this semester. We will be discussing event ideas for this semester. Come if you have any suggestions, concerns, or just want to see what our club is all about!
From the CSO President: R. Darnell Carpenter
Welcome Commuter Students! As the President of the Student Body for WCSU I would like to extend my best wishes for your successes this semester. Once again we have all come together to become part of the West Conn Family. As Commut-er Students, I would like to encourage all of you to not only attend your classes on campus, but to become active in our campus life. Each student, commuter or residence, young or older, has the same access to all of the
programs provided here at WCSU, so take advantage of them! While it is difficult to balance all of the
rigorous scheduling, course work, and the daily grind of driving to school each day, take the time to
do something fun for your-self and to become part of something great. Whatever your ambitions may be, I assure you that the WCSU community can provide you with avenues to expand your mind and ability to help accomplish anything. While you may be living on your own, or still living at ‘home’, WCSU is your home no matter which way you slice it. Again best of luck this semester and if there is anything I can do to assist you in your endeavors, come see me.

As you may know, WCSU has developed a program for students entitled GROW – Great Resources ! The GROW program is designed to introduce students to many of the resources available on cam-pus and in the Danbury area, while also providing them with information that will help to make their experiences at WCSU richer while making them more successful. This
semester, a series of 8 din-ners with faculty/staff speak-ers will be selected by our ARMs. Following the dinner in the Faculty Dining Room (with food centered around the speaker’s past), the guest speaker will speak about his/her educational and profes-sional journey, and what path led them to WCSU. And now, here’s where YOU come in! One of the most important things a new stu-
dent can do is become in-volved in activities and organi-zations on campus. I’d like to start off our GROW program this year with you–students and administrators who can speak to what it means to get involved on campus. And, if you can identify another few students you think might be able to participate, all the bet-ter! Here are the details for our first GROW dinner:

Arildo de Souza has earned his status as the most respected and tal-ented Brazilian musician in CT through over 17 years of hard work.
His first CD defines his musical personality, and expands his Brazilian musical influences into an original expression of world music. Drum-beats, real life, poetry, acoustic guitar and the Portuguese language are the ingredients that make each track on his CD amazingly capti-
vating. www.myspace.com/arildodesouza

“Today, Dion’s original music is a surprising combination of catchy pop/rock hooks with brooding, raw emotionality. His songs draw
upon personal experiences but speak to a greater audience about conflicting perspectives and desires. What distinguishes this young artist from others is his genuine lack of pretense and his guarded nature. He almost never reveals the backstories to his songs, en-couraging his fans to find their own connection to the words.”
Every time Kurt Scobie sits down at the keys, the power of his expressive lyrics and percussive piano style have a magnetic effect on the entire room. The lyrics strike a
familiar chord but carry a refreshing tone, and the catchy melodies enable listeners to sing along, even after hearing
his songs for the first time.
One-half of the folk-rock duo Free Thought, singer/songwriter Jen Vanderlyn weaves unique stories of colorful characters into intri-
guing and catchy melodies. Reminiscent in sound and style of Fairport Convention and Joni Mitchell, Jen is currently promoting Free
Thought’s debut CD, “In Her Eyes,” available on CD Baby and iTunes. freethoughtmusic.wordpress.com

come to Coffeehouse for an evening of all-night open mic. Per-form yourself (sing a song, play your instrument, do a sketch, tell a
joke, or read a poem or short story). Or, if you are not the perform-er type, convince a friend to go and come in support. The Coffee-
