FOOD & GARDEN WASTE
What can go in?✔
Using the light-green lid bin for food and garden waste will divert about 8,000 tonnes of waste from landfill every year. The green bin contents are recycled into compost and soil conditioners. Food waste can be wrapped in one or two sheets of newspaper or paper towel before being placed in the food and garden waste bin.
Your green bin is collected weekly.
Avoiding food waste
Research suggests more than half of food waste produced by the average household can be avoided. See Council’s website for tips and links.
FAST FACT No bags or bin liners, even compostable
ones, are accepted as they break down
differently.

RUBBISH SERVICE
Now that food waste goes in the green bin, there should be less rubbish.
In future, to make a clearer distinction between the two green-lidded bins used in the new service, Council will replace dark-green rubbish bin lids with red lids.
Your rubbish bin is collected fortnightly.

Bans on bin contents
In 2019, the Victorian Government banned all electronic waste from landfill. Electronic waste, including televisions and kitchen appliances, CDs, light globes and printer cartridges must be separated from your rubbish bin and taken to various locations. See Council’s website for details.

MIXED RECYCLING
Hobsons Bay is partnering with a local processor that has strict, high standards for what it can and can’t recycle locally. If you put the wrong things in the yellow bin, it will reduce the quality and value of collected materials, and can result in the entire load going to landfill. If you are in doubt whether an item is recyclable, then leave it out of your recycling bin and put it in the rubbish bin.
Council is continually working with our recycling partners to find new local end markets and recycling opportunities for household items. Check the directory on Council’s website for where residents can recycle items not accepted in the yellow-lid bin, such as REDcycle outlets for soft plastics (redcycle.net.au).
Your recycling bin is collected fortnightly.

FAST FACT Remove lids. They are often made from mixed
materials and go in the general waste bin.
Avoiding waste in the first place
Many people have already changed their daily habits and carry a reusable coffee cup and bag. You can also choose to buy products with less packaging or with packaging that can be recycled back into new products.
GLASS RECYCLING
Separating your household’s glass waste into its own bin makes more glass available to be recycled into new materials, including road and rail projects, and potentially new jars and bottles. Most glass can be recycled over and over again, with no loss to its integrity.
Your glass bin is collected every four weeks.

Please rinse out all bottles and jars to help prevent contamination. See Council’s website for how to dispose of light globes.
