54yi; .: ' "[ Mining Enterprise s," the Alexsp Partnership and David P. Rogers Limited '- :'y :
was formed to explore the lower section of the Huronian Supergroup
---; and to test the thickness of the Paleozoic sequence.
Two diamond drill holes were sunk in the south of St. Joseph's
Island. Drilling totalled 1,783 feet with both holes penetrating
- Huronian quartzites. Longyear, Canada Inc., Zcorth Bay, Ontario
performed the diamond drilling.
PREVIOUS WORK;
One hole has been drilled previously within the Licence area:
In the winter of 1976, Conwest Exploration Limited Uranium
Joint Venture drilled Hole CW-76-03 on Thessalon Island to a depth
of 3*289 feet. The hole cut the Mississagi Formation, Pecors-Ramsay
Formation, the Matinenda equivalent and stopped in Archean basement granite
gneiss with dikes. .Representative drill core sections are
maintained by the Ministry in Sault Ste. Marie.
General geological mapping and compilation were also carried out
during that year, (see References, report on file vjfth the Ontario ;
Ministry of Natural Resources in Toronto and Sault Ste. Marie).

systematically checked for radioactivity and none is present. : '" '; ;;^:i:-;"';r^ V

Con. Vll, Lot A, NW corner of crown lot and K3 corner of the gravel
pit permit. It was collared on June 2 , 1980 and reached bedrock at
105 feet. It penetrated 8?? feet of Ordovician limestones,
dolomites and shales, and 215 feet of Cambrian sandstones before
inter acting Huronian sediments at 982 feet. The top 14 feet
of the Precambrian is a regolith of arkosic composition with coarse
clasts of feldspar and quartzite. It grades ~c a medium grained
arkose and downward to a weathered quartzite. The hole was
completed at 1029 feet on June 21, 1980.
The Huronian sediments are of unknown age. They appear as
high angle, steeply dipping beds.
Drill Hole J-8Q-10
On June 22, 1980, hole J-80-10 was sunk on St. Joseph*s Island,
Jocelyn Twp.. Con Vll, Lot k , 330' N. and 330' E. of tb SW corner. : : ;
The hole penetrated 230 feet of overburden before encountering 106
feet of Ordovician shale, 259 feet of limestones and dolomites of \ . 7
the Trenton/Black River Group, and 95 feet of Cambrian sandstone. v \ --
A 10 foot interval of Precambrian regolith was intersected at 690 feet. ,. .'. '

SUMMARY REPCHTon
EXPLORATORY LICENCE NO. 1488? NORTH CHANNEL, LAKE HURON and PARTS of
ST. JOSEPH i S ISLAND, ONTARIO 1981
Scope and Previous Wcrk:
This report covers exploration carried out in 1981 on Exploratory Licence No. 14887 held by David P. Pogers Limited and located in the North Channel of Lake Huron and parts of St. Joseph's Island, Ontario.
Two holes were drilled and reported on in 1980. Additional studies on these holes were carried out in 1980/81.
The initial primary purpose of the exploratory licence of occupation was to permit drilling for Elliot-Lake type uranium deposits. This was part of a continuing program started by the writer back in 19^7 through to the present.
The offshore area from Mississagi Bay east of Thessalon to St. Joseph Island has been drill tested with negative results. The only area of favourable Matinenda facies with weakly radioactive conglomerate, which is interpreted as an edge of a favourable subbasin, lies offshore to the south of the Grant Islands. The steepening dips and extreme offshore location makes further exploration in this area impractical.
To the west, Sulphur Island and southern St. Joseph Island, a series of younger granites are intruding the Matinenda equivalent and structuraly it becomes very complex under the Paleozoic cover. Geologically this area is similar to large areas underlying Manitoulin, Cockburn and Drummond Islands. Further exploration for Elliot Lake type deposits in this area does not appear to be warranted.
1981 Program;
The two holes ( J-80-9, J-80-1O ) drilled on Licence Ll+887 daring the course of a much broader regional program cut low grade oil shale sections at the base of the Collingwood formation. This rock unit is equivalent to known outcrops along the northeast edge of Manitoulin Island and the Collingwood area since the turn of the century.
The original drill logs are herein re-submitted together with detailed logging and assay data of the oil shale sections. Consideration concerning oil shale deposits of economic interest were considered during year two of the Licence.
-2-
In light of current economics of high grade oil shale projects being shut down in the U.S.A. and Australia etc, the low grade deposits in the Collingwood formation are of only marginal interest.
R e comnend ationY
No further exploration in recommended for either the uranium or oil shale potentials within the Licence No. U+88?.
It is recommended that the Licence of Occupation be dropped and returned to the Crown.
