Safety & Service Director
Honorary Rotarian Mr. Ernest “Ernie”
C. Hall (AKA Scott Lewis) joined us for
fellowship our November 8, 1970 weekly
club meeting. Ernie was an important
aviation figure who was born in Warren.
Ernie first flew in 1909, and the Wright
Brothers of Dayton were among his flight
instructors. In 1915, he opened his own
flight school at Conneaut Lake, Ohio, using
a Wright model G flying boat. During
WWI, he trained pilots for the military
Curtiss School of Aviation in Newport
News, Virginia and later at Call Field in
Texas. Ernie had over 17,000 flying hours and was a member of “The
Early Birds”, an organization of pilots who flew solo prior to December
17, 1916. He was named Mr. OX-5 of 1958, the number one spot of
pilots who had flown airplanes powered with a Curtiss OX-5 engine built
during The Great War.
Following WWI, Ernie returned to Warren, where he established a new
flight school. He used his own airport to train students. In 1936,
Ohio Governor Davey appointed him Director of the Bureau of
Aeronautics. He eventually returned to his flying school to continue
teaching.
Some say Ernie is the first man to be employed continuously for 50
years in the aviation field. He joins fellow Ohioans, John Glenn, Neil
Armstrong, Frank and Orville Wright, and many others who are at
the forefront of aviation history!

THE USO OF NORTHERN OHIO:
SERVING THOSE WHO SERVE OUR COUNTRY
Mr. Bruce Billie, a veteran and former Lieutenant in the
United States Navy, is currently the Director of the USO
facility at the 9 facility at the 910th Air Base in Vienna, Ohio. He provided an
overview of the services provided to service members and their
families families.
The USO was founded in 1941. Its mission is to
strengthen strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them
connected to family, home, and country throughout their
service to our nat service to our nation. This is done through entertainment,
morale morale building, and a host of other programs and events.
The USO’s first show was presented in California. It was
such such a big hit that the frequency of events soon increased.
Whil While many remember entertainer Bob Hope as being the face
of of the USO, nearly 7,000 other performers presented
425,000 425,000 shows to military personnel during WWII. After the
War, the organization disbanded but reformed during the
Korean War. Since its inception, 3.5 million soldiers have
benefitted from services that assist them with mental health,
relaxation, and simply forgetting the war.
Why is this important? Because higher morale means
fighting with fighting with higher performance and having the will to
survive. will to survive. Mr. Billie explained that today, soldiers are asked
to do more with less. There are troop reductions, an increase
increase in deploy in deployments, and budget cuts, and benefits are being
challenged. USO challenged. These stressors are especially true for the
areserve Reserve and National Guard members, who comprise 38% of
the the total military force. On top of combat worries, they
have t have to deal with family and employment issues. Surveys
have shown that the USO is just as important today as it
was was 10 years ago.
Some of the routine programs sponsored by the USO
include sending care packages to active service members,
providing private telephone networks and internet connectivity
to soldiers, and connecting military members with services,
opportunities, and resources to assist them and their families
with the transition back to civilian life.

pit Locally, “United Through Reading” is a unique program that
allows servicemen and women to record themselves reading a
book book to their children. The video recording and book are then
then provided to t provided to their families back home. In addition, “Baby Sea
Bags” are Bags” are comfort bags which are provided to service members
and their families who are expecting or have recently added a
new new member. Baby items, such as blankets, bottles, diapers,
and toys and toys get the new bundle of joy off to a great start.
An activity lounge was recently added to the Youngstown
Reserve Air Base, the first military lounge in the country to
be be stationed at an air base. This gives service members and
their their families, as well as recruits, a comfortable environment
to relax, as well in which to relax. The air base support office has also
offered provided financial aid to military members who have faced
crises, such as house fires, prior to deployment.
Last year, the USO of Northern Ohio celebrated its 75th
Anniversary. Their services have had world-wide reach, and
this type of community support makes a remarkable difference
impact on the lives of the men and women serving overseas!
