“I never set out to be a book artist, it just happened…”

Ros Rixon

Ros RixonSpheres

Ros Rixon only works with the very best materials for her art - the best piquements and vintage papers and all her glass spheres are handblown crystal which are bespoke to her. Each piece is therefore unique and has their own little quirks which Ros feels adds to their character.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover

Hand blown lead crystal Sphere

32 cms

Sphere filled with text taken from 1932 edition of Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

“All hopes of eternity and all gain from the past he would have given to have her there, to be wrapped warm with him in one blanket, and sleep, only sleep. It seemed

Madame Bovary

Hand blown lead crystal Sphere

27 cms

Sphere filled with text taken from a c.1950 edition of Madame Bovary.

“Before she married, she thought she was in love; but the happiness that should have resulted from that love, somehow had not come. It seemed to her that she must have made a mistake, have misunderstood in some way or another. And Emma tried hard to discover what, precisely, it was in life that was denoted by the words ‘joy, passion,

intoxication’, which had always looked so fine to her in books.”

Ros RixonLove Lines

The following works were inspired by How do I love thee? Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.I love thee to the depth and breadth and heightMy soul can reach, when feeling out of sightFor the ends of being and ideal grace.I love thee to the level of every day’sMost quiet need, by sun and candle-light.I love thee freely, as men strive for right.I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.I love thee with the passion put to useIn my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.I love thee with a love I seemed to loseWith my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,I shall but love thee better after death.

All text has been printed using archival pigment inks on antique and vintage papers.

Ros RixonCaptured Tales of Love and Lust

Ros Rixon began working with text and books at University while trying to

get to grips with the meaning of art. Over a period of time, the books began

to take over her workspace and the words began to take over her walls until

she reached the point where the information around her evolved into the art

itself when she created her first sculptures incorporating text into glass forms.

“In the midst of research I suddenly found the information around me was

evolving into the art. There were times when I wished I could just create

something purely for creativity alone, but the words had taken hold”.

Rixon works with hand-blown lead crystal spheres and bottles which she

has made to order for her pieces, many of which are unique. She then fills

the spheres or bottles with text pain-painstakingly cut from vintage copies of

books and manuscripts. For Captured Tales of Love and Lust, Ros sourced vintage

texts from all over the world, including The Perfumed Garden which took over

six months to track down.

“I never set out to be a book artist it just happened. I see the published

book as a piece of art – remove a book’s binding and you are left with

a beautiful river of words flowing across the room. This is my starting

point, and when I am most happy. My works, like the books I use come

in all shapes and sizes but each is created wanting to provoke and remind

the viewer that text is beautiful.”
