What is a Virus? Viruses are particles of nucleic acid,

protein, and in some cases lipids that can reproduce only by infecting living cells.

Viruses themselves have no fossil record, but it is quite possible that they have left traces in the history of life.

Capsid:

Proteins that enable a virus to enter a host cell

Bacteriophage

Viruses that infect bacteria

Retro Virus

Viruses that contain RNA as their genetic information.

Prions

Viruses consisting only of proteins, no RNA or DNA.

Infections/Cycles

Lytic Infection~ In a lytic infection, a virus enters a cell, makes copies of itself, and causes the cell to burst.

Lysogenic Infection~ In a Lysogenic Infection, a virus embeds its DNA into the DNA of the host cell and is replicated along with the host cells DNA.
