THE ROMAN WORLD THE ROMAN WORLD

In the north of England the Rome built a wall.

About every seven kilometres there was a strong camp.

The wal was long: from sea to sea .

It was 120 kilometres long and six metres high.

The Romans in England

The Romans arrived there in 165 A.D.

The Romans empire from one side to the other was almost 4,000 kilometres.

THE BEGINNINGTHE BEGINNING

The Romans believed that their city started in 753.

Some of then made their homes on the seven hills near the river Tiber.

This was a very good place to choose.

• There was an island in the Tiber, was easier to cross than in other parts.

• It was also 25 kilometres from Rome to the sea ,so the city was safe from attack by foreign ships.

• When the Romans began to attack other countries ,they attacked from a good position.

• The Romans believed that two brothers founded the city: Romulus and Remus.

• Then Romulus killed Remus and become the first king of Rome.

• The last king was Tarquinius Superbus.

• For the next five hundred years ,Rome was a Republic.

• The people chose their politicians, but they did not make them kings.

• After Romulus, Rome grew slowly stronger.

ARRIVING IN ROME

• Hadrian´s wall was thirty years old, and the army had just taken Dura-Europos.

• As you follow the Appian way, from the south, you see the smoke first.

• It comes from the work places and houses of one million people.

HOUSES

• For most of the people of Rome, home was one room in a high building.

• In the end, the government had to pass a law:buildings could have no more than five floors.

• The poor people lived in one room.

DAILY LIFE

• People did not usually go out in the evening because the streets were not safe.

• There were no police.• When rich people went out

for dinner at night,they took slaves with them.

• Poorer people did not give dinner parties.

A VISIT TO THE BATHS

• Life for the rich and the poor was very different, but they often enjoyed the same things.

• Almost everyone went to the baths because most baths were free.

In the baths• The biggest of all were

the Baths of Diocletian in the north-east of the city.

• Opened in 306 AD, they were more than 300 metres long on each side.

• These large baths used a lot of water and each had its own aqueduct.

THE CLASSES

Through the history of Rome,a small group of families formed the upper class.

In the early days they ruled the city ,but slowly the lower class became stronger.

THE HOMES OF THE RICH

• THERE WAS ONE BIG DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE RICH ROMANS HOMES AND MOST HOUSES TODAY.

• MODERN HOUSES USUALLY HAVE A LOT OF WINDOWS…
