Since 1989 the Romanian educational system – whish is tuition-free, has been through several reforms- each interesting in its own way, but it has also been regulated and enforced – at every step - by the Ministry of Education and Research.

School

• Most children start school at the age of seven.

• Most elementary schools are public.

• It is compulsory in Romania to go to school until the 10th grade (when pupils are 16 or 17) but most pupils graduate the 12th grade and they take the baccalaureate exam.
