By
Dr. Devinder K. Kansal, Head, Department of PhysicalEducation & Sports Sciences, University of Delhi &
Principal, Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education& Sports Sciences (Fully financed by Delhi Govt.).
FACTS

2. P.E.T. is an agent of bringing positive changein an individual’s lifestyle.
3. Lifestyle is the only vehicle of permanentlyremaining healthy, wealthy & well.

It is beyond any doubts that the futureof human well-being depends on theappropriate modernization andupdating of Human Resources (HR) inPhysical Education.
3
NEED OF H.R. DEVELOPMENT IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education Teacher can enable thestudents .
To Learn (Develop Mind)
To Live fuller (Develop Body),
To Love (Develop Trust Heart), and
To Leave a Legacy (Meaningful andpurposeful life; realise SOUL.
4
Role of P.E.T.
The conduct of Refresher Courses bySCERT & its DIETS for PETs is one of themost important step for keepingteachers abreast of moderndevelopments. Such activities result indiminishing the gap between theknowledge & skill of new P.E.T.sproduced and the P.E.T.s already in-service.
5
SCERT’S PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE
1. Physical Education Teachers can play apivotal role for promoting wholisticpersonality development of schoolchildren.
2. Revolutionary changes are needed inupdating the course contents, books andadequate production of competentteachers for all round developmentof the child’s personality.

VISIONS (Contd..(2)
3. PETs are to play a revolutionary role inmotivating children for pursuinglifetime of healthful physical activity (byenabling them to learn skills, implications, benefits from involvementin physical activities and consequencesof not doing so).
7
MISSION STATEMENTS
1. Holistic Personality Development paper is to beintroduced for all high school, graduate and pre-service teacher training courses.
2. Physical Education Teachers are to lay thefoundation of HPD by teaching the skills neededfor healthy lifestyles.
3. Physical Activity is the only anti-aging, anti-disease, anti-distrophy pill. Hence, its correctprocedure to imbibe in everyone’s regular dailyschedules, is essential to prevent disease, promote health and develop holistic personality.
8
With the advent of wide spreadfacilities of internet, anyimprovisations made in any of theadvanced countries now easilyreach each school of the world, where ever an internet connectionis available.
9
QUICK PROGRESSION IN EXISTING KNOWLEDGE
Teachers can promote students by giving them ahealthy CAKE by making them aware and skillful of
Commitments to theApplication of daily useableKnowledge alreadyExisting in literature (CAKE)
Unfortunately application of regular physical activityskills teaching for preventing disease and promotinghealth is yet to be recognized by educationists.
10
HEALTHY CAKES in place of unhealthy CAKES
It has been pointed out that Personality is acombination of two words i.e. Personal +Identity. Hence, to understand correctly, each teacher must understand that anycomponent that gives identity to anindividual is a component of one’spersonality.
11
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT
Although educationists have advocated fromtime immemorial that education promotesone’s all round personality in all domains i.e.CAPS or Cognitive (Mind), Affective (Heart),Psychomotor (Body), Spiritual (Soul), andSocial (Society).
But none of the domains other than cognitivehas been included in the curricula of Pre-service and in-service training programme asan obligatory component of learning.
12
Multi-domain Approach to P.D.
As per Delors’ Commission four pillars of P.D.are:-
‘To Know’,‘To do’,‘To Be’ and‘To Live Together’
Only PETs have to follow all these pillars to train andteach their students and can not avoid any of theabove pillars which are yet to be used by theeducationists.
13
Components of Personality & Physical Education
As every teacher has to know that thereare Hardware and Software parts of acomputer. Similarly, we can dividepersonality domains into hardware andSoftware. The human bodyrepresents the Hardware of a soulhaving different softwaresbelonging to Mind, Heart andEnvironment.

Physical Personality Development
Physical Personality : The total of individual’s
specific responses, habits & behaviours that
affect an individual’s physical well-being.
Development : Maturity status achievement
(with growth, complexity and learning with
passage of time).
Personality Development
Personality Development is possible if one aquires all the following four pillars of P.D. :-
1. ‘To Know’
2. ‘To Do’
3. ‘To Be’ and
4. ‘To LIVE (Exist) together.
16
Accordingly one’s Well-being is of four Types :-
1. Physical Well-being (Needs all four pillars).
2. Mental Well-being (Needs only two pillars 1& 4).
3. Hearty Well-being (Needs only one pillar 3).
4. Spiritual Well-being (Needs all the fourpillars).
17
18
Physical Well-being
Physical Well-being : The total of all physical
characteristics that are responsible to affect
one’s physical health like height, weight,
muscular-strength, endurance, flexibility of
joints, cardio-respiratory endurance, body
composition.
Other Well-beings
• Just on the pattern of physical well-being,totality of respective characteristicsresponsible to affect one’s Emotional, Mentalor Spiritual Healths are termed as EmotionalWell-being, Mental Well-being & SpiritualWell-being (However, we will deal withPhysical Well-being in some details).

Physical Health
Physical Health : Most often associated visiblecomponent of health. It is evident from non-performance measures like healthy bloodliquid profiles, normal blood pressure, bloodsugar, blood insulin level and other structuralmeasures like body composition.

Metabolic Fitness
Metabolic Fitness : Positive state of thephysiological systems commonly associatedwith reduced risk for chronic diseases such asdiabetes and heart disease (mainly due toregular physical activity and other positivelifestyle habits).
Metabolic fitness is evident from healthy bloodlipid profiles, B.P., blood sugar, blood insulinlevel and other non-performance measureslike body component.
23
Physical Personality Development (PPD)
There is an immediate need to pay attention
to PPD because the Carnegie Commission
report, High School, stated (Boye, 1983)
“Clearly no knowledge is more critical than
knowledge about health. Without, it no
other life goal can be successfully achieved”.
24
Physical Personality Development
“Quality physical education programs in our
schools and colleges are essential in
developing motor skills, physical fitness and
understanding concepts that foster LIFELONG
HEALTHY LIFESTYLES (NASPE, PE is critical
Report, 2001).
4 T i.e.Thought,

Training &
True Trust
Self-challenge alone can stop self destroyingwrong decisions in 4Ts.
Success in 4T challenge is possible onlythrough becoming physical education savvy.

4 T Self Challenge
“Protect yourself from becoming ensnarled*in the other people’s issues, and instead staytrue to your core personal and professionalmission statements”.

Physical Activity is an anti-aging pill and PETis an agent of bringing positive changes instudents’ lifestyle.
A Teacher without following PhysicalActivity schedules (for self) is Blind(ignorant) and unfaithful to his teachings.
28
Essential Physical Activity

Take the first step of doing regular physicalactivity repeat it for six months, I assureyou that you will not only construct abeautiful body with your holisticpersonality developed but will also lay thesolid undamagable foundation of livinghappy, healthy, fit and well enjoying life.
29
Steps for Enjoyable Life
“Till Responsibility of a Teacher is gainedby self example of adopting regularphysical activity or becoming a fullerteacher by adding Physical to his/herdesignation (Teacher), we can not stopdegenuinsizing of young & old learners inschools, colleges & universities”.
30
SELF EXAMPLE ESSENTIAL
“All Children are born geniuses; 9999 outof every 10000 are swiftly, inadvertentlydegeniusized by grown ups”.
By not giving Physical Education Trainingfor holistic personality development.
R. Buckminster Fuller (Born 1895)

31
INADEQUATE EDUCATION(Without Physical Education)
Many of the Department of Education allover the world are giving lame degree ofeducation without teaching all domains ofpersonality development especially byleaving physical education or bodydomain of ‘To Do’ aspect.
IRRELAVENT IS NOT SURFACING DUE Tolower outputs of Physical Activity intoapplication & poor HRD.
32
IRRELAVANT EDUCATIONISTS
In order to make refresher courses morefruitful, it is important that someresource books on modernization andrecent developments are made availableto PETs in their local school libraries. This is the only way to reinforce theconcepts learned during refreshercourses.
33
Procuring Useful Applied Resource Books
Following four books in order of priority must beavailable to all P.E.T.s in the Libraries of theInstitutions/schools where the P.E.T. isemployed:-
1. Textbook of Applied Measurement,Evaluation & Sports Selection (Kansal, 2008).
2. Fitness & Wellness (Hoeger & Hoeger, 2007).3. Foundations of P.E., Ex. Sc. And Sports (Wuest
and Boucher 2003)4. The National Body Challenge by P. Peeke
(2006).5. Anspaugh & Ezell : Teaching Today’s Health
(2004). 34
Recommended Priority of Books
President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
• President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam writes, “Ignitedminds of the youth are the greatest resourcecompared to any resource on the earth, underthe earth, and above the earth. When ignitedminds work and perform with indomitable spirit,a prosperous, happy, and safe India is assured”.
• The youth get ignited minds when they getholistic education and acquire ‘treasure within’ asdescribed by UNESCO’s Delors Commissionreport.
