Wealthy landowners, however, bought up much of the land that village farmers had once worked. Beginning in the early 1700s, large landowners dramatically improved farming methods. These agricultural changes amounted to an agr icu l tura l revo lu t ion . They eventually paved the way for the Indust r ia l Revo lu t ion . The Industrial Revolution refers to the shift from making goods by hand to making them by machine. This began in England during the 18th century and soon spread to Continental Europe and North America.
