OSHA Construction Revised Scaffold Standard

Quick Overview

This meeting covers the six key provisions of the OSHA scaffold standard.

A guardrail or personal fall arrest system on all sides except the side where the work is being done must protect employees doing overhand bricklaying from supported scaffolds.

There are six key provisions of this new standard that all employees should know:

Before each work shift and after any occurrence that could affect the structural integrity, a competent person must inspect the scaffold and scaffold components for visible defects.

Scaffold Supervision

When erecting and dismantling supported scaffolds, a competent person must determine the feasibility of providing a safe means of access and fall protection for these operations.

The standard requires fall protection at a 10-foot height above a lower level for employees.

Guardrail Height

The height of the toprail for scaffolds manufactured and placed in service before January 1, 2000 can be between 36" and 45". The height of the toprail for scaffolds manufactured and placed in service after January 1, 2000 must be between 38" and 45".

When the crosspoint of crossbracing is used as a toprail, it must be between 38" and 48" above the platform.

Midrails

Midrails must be installed approximately halfway between the toprail and the platform surface.

When crosspoint of crossbracing is used as a midrail, it must be between 20" and 30" above the work platform.
