Revenge & Justice in The Odyssey
Bri D., Tim P., Jess S., Kenton L., Ally Z.
Revenge“getting back
at someone
for a wrong
they
committed,
but is
normally only
for the good
of an
individual”

Examples of Revenge in The Odyssey
1. Odysseus wanted to
avenge the death of his
crew members, so he
blinded Polyphemos.
Polyphemos, in return,
prays to his father
Poseidon that Odysseus
goes through many
hardships along his
journey. http://riverdaughter.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/polyphemus2-37171.jpg
2. Because the
Phaicians helped
Odysseus arrive
home, Poseidon
turned their boat
to stone.
This is an example
of revenge because
Poseidon did it for
his own benefit.

3. Odysseus and
Telemachos got
revenge on the
suitors by killing
them all because
the suitors
disrespected
Odysseus’
household.
This revenge
caused massive
chaos in Ithaca. http://www.glogster.com/media/1/4/10/67/4106761.jpg
Justice“giving
someone what
they deserve,
and is usually
for the good
of society
because it
keeps order
among the
people”

Examples of Justice in The
Odyssey
1. Agamemnon was
justfied by his son
Orestes when
Orestes killed
Aegisthos.
This can be
considered justice
because Orestes’
only intention was
to honor his father.

2. Telemachos
displayed justice
by honoring his
father and
staying in charge
of the household.
He stood his
ground and did
not let the
suitors take over.

3. For cheating on
him, Hephaistos
embarrased
Aphrodite by
chaining her and
Ares to a bed in
front of the gods.
This is justified
because he only
taught them a
lesson, he did not
hurt them. http://personal.monm.edu/lmccann/indpro3.jpg
4. Odysseus’ crew
ate the cows that
they found on
Helios’ island.
Zeus justified this
action by creating
a storm which
prevented them
from leaving the
island.
