Introduction
This guide is a joint effort of the Office of Regulatory Services (ORS) and Council on the Ageing ACT (COTA ACT). The guide provides a listing of retirement villages in the ACT to assist consumers in choosing a suitable retirement village to meet their needs and requirements.
The information in this guide should be read in conjunction with the Retirement Villages Handbook and public disclosure statements provided by retirement villages.
This guide does not include the following complexes: • Commonwealth Government funded aged care hostels • Nursing homes • Mobile home parks • Residence subject to a tenancy agreement with the housing commissioner • Boarding houses • Housing Assistance Act 2007 tenancies
This guide does not apply to the following facilities that may be located within a retirement village: • respite care buildings • employee accommodations • residential premises, where the operator and the resident have a residential
tenancy agreement under the ACT Residential Tenancies Act 1997, if the agreement contains a term to say the Act does not apply to the premises.
Disclaimer
While everything practicable has been done to ensure the accuracy of information in this guide, no liability is accepted for any loss or damage whatsoever attributable to reliance upon any of that information. Nothing in this guide should be taken to displace the need to seek professional advice.
3
What is the role of the Office of Regulatory Services (ORS)? The ORS administers the laws governing retirement villages and has the following responsibilities: • provides information regarding retirement village legislation • clarifies legislative requirements • provides information sessions • conducts inspection programs • investigates allegations of non-compliance
The ORS does NOT: • recommend certain retirement villages • comment on the performance or integrity of any ACT retirement village for
prospective residents
For information and help on retirement village issues please see the contacts page at the end of this publication.
What is the Role of the Council on the Ageing ACT (COTA ACT)?
COTA ACT is the peak organisation concerned with all issues related to ageing. It is an independent, non-party political and non-religious organisation working to protect and promote the well-being, rights and interests of all older people in the ACT irrespective of socio-economic, ethnic, religious or cultural background.
COTA ACT talks to Governments, the media and the community about issues of direct concern to all older people in the ACT. We make regular submissions to government on issues affecting older people. As a member of several ACT government standing committees, such as the ACT Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing, and special committees of enquiry, COTA ACT can have an ongoing input into the advice going to government. COTA ACT also provides services – some on behalf of government – for Canberra citizens.
