DESCRIPTION

Using Gagnè's nine steps of instructions with instructional design, but with a more learner-centered approach.

TRANSCRIPT

“My department needs help, we keeprepeating the same

mistakes overand over…”

“Have you thoughtAbout implementing

an After Action Review Process? It’s verygood at capturing

‘Lessons Learned!’”

“I’m going to use

Gagnè's nine steps

of instructions during my

design,but with a

more learner-centered

approach”

Before they even come to class, the learner’s manager discusses the need for it and what he expects upon their

return

In turn, the learners discuss what they need to learn and be able to perform

They negotiate what their take-a-ways will be, thus they are ‘pre-framed’

before they even enter the learning environment

And rather than telling them what an ‘After Action Review’ (AAR) and

‘Lessons Learned’ are

They are going to tell me what it means to them

Rather than reading them a predetermined objective

They are going to tell me what they need in order to implement the AAR process

Rather than me telling them what we learned in the past

They are going to tell me how their experiences will help them and where it

falls short

I am going to present some material; however, it’s a case study

And they are going to have to read and discuses this example and then they

are going to have to produce the information

Depending upon their skill level, I may have to provide some ‘leading questions’ to make it a guided

discovery rather than an exploratory activity

After they complete their case study

We will compare their solutions to the Army’s After Action Review solution

In the first activity the model or example (case study) was produced for them

and they extracted the required information from it

Now that they have the information to do it, they will produce a model or example

by each of them actually leading an AAR session

Thus we had them produce the information or content, then we had them produce the supporting model or example

This is essential for ‘whole task’ practice so they will be able to perform when they return to their jobs

This allows them to be producers of their own learning, rather than just

consumers

An accomplished performer will monitor their performance

And provide constructive feedback

When they return to their job, their manager will ensure they get to put their new skills to work

He will also let them know how they are performing

We will provide a wiki to drop their documents into that were produced

during the AAR sessions so that others can learn from them

We will set them up on Yammer, a micro blogging tool similar to Twitter, so they can tweet what they have learned, and point others towards the wiki if they are

facing similar challenges

In addition, we will do a group blog in order to have longer and more in depth

discussions

“YesGagnè's nine

steps of

instructions is still valid after more

than a decade!”
