Connect: Interpret the diagram. What point do you think it is trying to make?

Big Picture: What were the immediate and long term responses
to the Icelandic volcano?
• Know the different ways that people responded to the Icelandic eruption.
• Categorise the responses into long term and short term.
• Create a roll play to demonstrate how the responses affected different stakeholders.
Defining Key Terms: Short term response: • Short term responses are not always long lasting but they
reduce the impacts at the time of the event. • Consider: How did people respond to the volcano
immediately after it erupted? – E.g. Students stuck abroad were given free accommodation for their
extended stay.
Long term response: • Long term responses are long lasting responses. • Consider: How did people respond to the event to ensure
that the same impacts wouldn’t happen in future? – E.g. Encourage people to take out travel insurance before going
abroad.
Activate: How did people respond to the Icelandic Volcano?
• Task: Analyse the series of sources to decide whether the response was a short term or long term response.
• Write your answer into a table.
Short Term Responses
Long Term Responses
All flights to and from the UK were suspended until further notice.

rebook holidays, lack of information, met office produce stats)
News reports

(scientific monitoring needs to improve)

(people stuck abroad and had bank wavers)

(need to get better at predicting where ash is)

• (needed to have better engineer teams)
Demonstrate: How do these responses have environmental,
economic and social consequences?
• Task: Review the responses on your table by filling in the identifying whether you think they impact:
• 1. The environment (nature)
• 2. The economy (money, government, businesses)
• 3. Social Implications (people, health, lifestyle)
Short Term Responses
Long Term Responses
Who/ What does this impact effect?
Task: Create your own role play scenario.
• Working in pairs create a roll play showing a long term or a short term response to the volcanic ash.
• Which stakeholder are you going to represent? (tourists, government, businesses etc)
• What will your point of view be?
Homework: GCSE practise Question
• Why are immediate and long term responses to volcanic eruptions important socially, economically and environmentally? (14 marks)
• Use the success criteria to help you.
• You could do your own extra research to support your answer.
• Handed in:….
Success Criteria • 1. I have defined the key terms (long term/ short
term/ response)
• 2. I have given examples of how the responses to the event have had social (people), environmental (nature) and economic (money) impacts.
• 3. I have explained these impacts by giving specific details about the Icelandic eruption.
• 4. I have made an argument about why they are important (consider what the future would be like if people didn’t respond to disasters?)
• 5. I have concluded my answer by suggesting ways that this event could be managed better in future.
