RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #1
Description: The diaphragm contracts and the volume of lungs increases, the air pressure drops in and air rushes in – Then the diaphragm muscle relaxes, the lungs become smaller, the air pressure rises, and air is expelled
WHAT IS HAPPENING:
BREATHING
WHAT TYPE OF AIR/GAS IS RUSHING IN?
OXYGEN (O2)
WHAT TYPE OF AIR/GAS IS EXPELLED/LET OUT?
CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2)
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #2
Watch this clip and figure out what Major Function #2 is:
https://youtu.be/gs1YtcwSoFQ
DESCRIPTION: Inside the lungs, oxygen (O2) is exchanged for carbon dioxide (CO2) waste through this process called:
EXTERNAL RESPIRATION
This respiratory process takes place through hundreds of millions of microscopic sacs called:
ALVELOI
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #3
Watch this clip that demonstrates Major Function #3:
https://youtu.be/IyGBaRG5yHk
DESCRIPTION: Red blood cells carry oxygen absorbed from the lungs around the bodythrough the vascular system, when the oxygenated blood reaches the narrow capillaries, the red blood cells release the oxygen. Oxygen diffuses through thecapillary walls into body tissues. The carbon dioxide diffuses from the tissuesinto red blood cells, the red blood cells carry the carbon dioxide back to thelungs to be released. This process is called:
INTERNAL RESPIRATION
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #4
Watch this short video and see if you can figure out the next Major Function of the Respiratory System:
https://youtu.be/-XGds2GAvGQDESCRIPTION: In the upper respiratory system, during exhalation, air passes from the lungs through the larynx, or “voice box.” The muscles in the larynx move the arytenoid cartilages, which then push the vocal folds/cords together. When the cords are pushed together, air passing between them makes them vibrate, creating…
SOUND
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #5
DESCRIPTION: This process begins with the olfactory fibers that line the nasal cavities inside the nose. As air enters the nose, some chemicals in the air bind to and activate the nervous system receptors on the cilia. This stimulus sends a signal to the brain through a series signals from the nasal cavities to the ethmoid bone to the olfactory bulbs, along the cranial nerve to the olfactory area of the cerebral cortex in the brain.
This process is called:
SMELLING

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
What other body systems does the Respiratory System work with?
ALL BODY SYSTEMS –The Respiratory System carries oxygen to all body tissues and retrieves carbon dioxide from all tissues
CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTIONS
To get us thinking about the Circulatory/Cardiovascular System we will do 20 jumping jacks.
CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: MAJOR FUNCTIONS
The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and the approximately 5 liters of blood that continuouslytravel through the bloodvessels.
CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: MAJOR FUNCTION #1
DESCRIPTION: The cardiovascular system transports blood to almost all of the body’s tissues. The blood delivers essential nutrients and oxygen and removes wastes and carbon dioxide to be processed or removed from the body. Hormones are transported throughout the body via the blood’s liquid plasma. This process is called:
TRANSPORTATION OF OXYGEN (O2), CARBON
DIOXIDE (CO2), AND NUTRIENTS
CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: MAJOR FUNCTION #2
DESCRIPTION: The cardiovascular system protects the body through its white blood cells. White blood cells clean up cellular debris and fight pathogens, such as germs that have entered the body. Platelets and red blood cells form scabs to help heal wounds. Blood also carries antibodies that help our bodies to fight pathogens, germs, diseases, etc. This process is called:
HEALING WOUNDS AND FIGHTING SICKNESS
CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: MAJOR FUNCTION #3
DESCRIPTION: Blood vessels help maintain a stable body temperature by controlling the blood flow to the surface of the skin. This process is called:
REGULATION OFBODYTEMPERATURE
CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: MAJOR FUNCTIONS
WHAT ARE THE MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF THE CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM?
TRANSPORTATION OF OXYGEN (O2), CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2), AND NUTRIENTS
HEALING WOUNDS AND FIGHTING SICKNESSES
REGULATION OF BODY TEMPERATURE
CIRCULATORY/CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
What other body systems does the Circulatory/Cardiovascular System work with?
ALL BODY SYSTEMS –The Circulatory/Cardiovascular System transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nutrients to all body tissues, heals wounds throughout the body, and regulates body temperature.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTIONS
SOCRATIVE QUESTION: What was the last thing you ate?
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTIONS
The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic nutrients to feed the entire body. Food is moves from the mouth andpasses through a long tube inside the body known as the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). The GI tract is made up of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, and large intestines and includes the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #1
DESCRIPTION: Food begins its journey through the digestive system in the mouth, also known as the oral cavity. Inside the mouth are many accessory organs that take the food and make it into smaller pieces such as the tongue, teeth, and salivary glands. The pharynx or throat is responsible for the passing of masses of chewed food from the mouth to the esophagus. The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the throat to the stomach. It carries swallowed masses of chewed food along its length to the stomach. The stomach acts as a food storage tank while this process takes place…
WHAT IS THIS MAJOR FUNCTION CALLED?
DIGESTION
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #2
DESCRIPTION: The digestive system secretes around 7 liters of fluids to help break down food, kill bacteria in our food, and using enzymes take apart large macromolecules like proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids into smaller components making it easier for our food to be digested and to travel through the rest of the digestive system. When the broken down food gets to the small intestine, segmentation occurs. Segmentation is when the small intestine contracts like hands squeezing a toothpaste tube. The molecules containing nutrients move through the small intestine walls into small blood and lymphatic vessels that carry them to the rest of the body to be absorbed. Water, B and K vitamins molecules continue on to the large intestine to be absorbed.
This major function of the Digestive System is called:
ABSORPTION OF NUTRIENTS
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:MAJOR FUNCTION #3
DESCRIPTION: Defecation removes indigestible substances from the body so that they do not accumulate inside the gut. The timing of defecation is controlled voluntarily by the conscious part of the brain, but must be accomplished on a regular basis to prevent a backup of indigestible materials.
What is final function of the Digestion System?
EXCRETION OF WASTE
