Residential care homes & nursing homes
DLW Flooring – high-quality floor coverings rooted in tradition
For more than 130 years, we have been manufacturing the natural floor covering linoleum, putting all our knowledge
and expertise into technical developments and innovative design. In addition to linoleum, we also offer design floor
coverings, vinyl and the hard-wearing textile floor covering fibrebonded. All of these satisfy not only national, but
also international standards and regulations. Within the company, we are always on the ball: in our development
centre, engineers work to ensure continuous improvements in our floors. Our DLW floor coverings are designed
and manufactured in Germany in accordance with the very highest quality standards.
As a company, DLW Flooring has a responsibility to people, to the users of our DLW floor coverings and to nature.
We focus on the sustainability of products: from the raw materials used, to cleaning and care, and right the way
through to recycling.
People are the top priority – we are committed to achieving a better quality of life

“The structure and grain of wood are for me an expression of vitality. The warm colours of a floor with a natural wood look are the best way to give a homely feel to a room.”Emmi Mieskes, Product Design at DLW Flooring GmbH
Selecting the right floor covering for healthcare facilities is
a challenge. On the one hand, the functional requirements
are very high, whilst on the other, patients benefit from an
ambience that is attractive and supports their recovery.
For each line of floor coverings, our designers have
created coherent colour palettes that allow the realisation
of harmonious overall concepts and inlays. They can also
be combined with existing wood décor, furniture or wall
colours.
Floor coverings for all requirements
DLW Linoleum is a robust natural product: hygienic, easy
to clean and available in a wide range of bright and more
muted colours. 98% of linoleum is made up of natural raw
materials such as linseed oil, cork, sawdust, natural resins
and jute. Thanks to its basic properties it is antibacterial
and especially durable. An uncomplicated and ecological
classic.
Scala Design floor tiles give floors a refined wood or
stone appearance. In comparison with real materials,
they are significantly more resistant, more hygienic and
easier to clean, yet they nonetheless create an inviting
and comfortable atmosphere in the room. They are thus
perfectly suited for extremely busy communal rooms, open-
plan kitchen-living rooms and cafeterias. They also provide
a high level of ambience in residents’ rooms.
DLW Vinyl is the multifaceted material that can do
everything in the healthcare sector: it is robust and durable.
Thanks to the PUR Eco System high-performance surface
treatment, these floor coverings are particularly hard-
wearing and robust. Vinyl floor coverings are available in
a wide range of colours, and there are variants that absorb
footfall sounds and variants with anti-slip properties. Our
“Mix & Match” modular construction system enables floors
which have different requirements to be consistent in colour
and design throughout the building. With Timberline we
offer a vinyl collection in timeless wood design also as a
sheet product, which can be laid to look virtually seamless.
For administration areas, we also offer the textile floor
covering DLW Fibrebonded. This material withstands even
the highest stresses, for example those caused by castor
wheels, and also reduces footfall sound.

homes and nursing care homes can be found on page 24

Using colour to improve your life
04 | 05 Individual feel-good ambience – using colour to improve your life
Material: Scala 100 walnut medium brown
Atmosphere with wood
Scala design wood-look floor tiles are almost
indistinguishable from original timbers. The
grain is even stamped into the boards, meaning
that the floor covering also feels realistic. At the
same time, the vinyl design floor tiles are robust
and easy to clean.
In matters relating to interior design, nursing home
and care establishments prioritise comfort, emotional
security and homely surroundings, which is exactly what
is needed by people who have been weakened by illness
or are disabled. Well thought-out design of colours and
equipment ensures that rooms both meet the needs of
residents and fulfil the high functional features demanded
by the establishments. Scientific studies have shown that
factors such as light quality, materials, colour and artwork
in a building contribute to a reduction of residents’ feelings
of insecurity, fear and stress.
Nursing homes and care establishments are increasingly
pursuing an holistic approach which misses nothing that
can contribute to the quality of life of residents, and which
is led primarily by the requirements of individuals for their
environment. At the same time, care home managers are
demanding high standards of furnishing and in particular of
the floor coverings that are used.
Cleanliness and hygiene are of the utmost importance in
this regard. It must be possible for the worst stains, caused
by blood or urine, for example, to be easily and thoroughly
removed by cleaning. In areas that are particularly
sensitive, we even recommend seamless flooring so
that dirt cannot settle. The flooring must also be stain
resistant, moisture resistant and resistant to all common
disinfectants. In workshops and community centres there
must be resistance to dirt that comes in from the street.
This also includes the concept of entrance areas which
have a sufficiently large area covered by dirt-trapping
flooring.
Always a safe choice
Safety must also be given high priority in nursing care
homes and care homes. There is a basic requirement for
all rooms to have non-slip and skid-proof floor coverings
that are also flame-resistant. All DLW Flooring resilient floor
coverings are at least anti-slip class R9, and some variants
are even R10. If to be used in areas with higher risks of
slipping, then we recommend for example our Favorite R10
floor covering. In addition, almost all the floors from our
Scala 55/100 range are in this anti-slip class. Legislators
and German employer’s liability insurance associations
have issued relevant recommendations with regard to this
matter (BGR 181 and ASR A1.5/1.2). DLW floor coverings
can also generally be upgraded from anti-slip class R9 to
R10 if a retrospective coating is added using cc Dr. Schutz.
Fire protection is standard with all DLW floor coverings
as per DIN EN 13501-1 and all the materials used are
flame-resistant. DLW Linoleum is also toxicologically safe
(DIN 53436).

“If the priority in rooms is functionality, our flooring does a good job of staying discreetly in the background.”Claus Dieter Misslang, Product Manager, DLW Flooring GmbH
A safe choice
Floor coverings in public buildings must be “flame-resistant” and non-slip. All our resilient floor
coverings comply with the category “flame-resistant” in accordance with EN 13501-1 and, even in the
event of a fire, the smoke from DLW Linoleum is regarded as toxicologically non-hazardous (DIN 53436).
DLW floor coverings also satisfy the requirements for at least anti-slip class R 9, making them suitable
for use in areas with an increased risk of slipping pursuant to DIN 51130.

Universal accessibility
08 | 09 Creating buildings with universal accessibility
What does universal accessibility mean?
“No one may be placed at a disadvantage on acccount of his
or her disability” is the wording in the German Constitution,
Article 3 paragraph 3. The structural implementation of
universal accessibility is set out in DIN 18040, 1-3.
The aim of creating buildings with universal accessibility is
to design living spaces that meet the needs of people with
disabilities, as well as ageing people. Irrespective of age,
individual impairment and language, it should be possible
for everyone to live with equal rights, autonomously and
independently. This includes, for example, families with
children, because managing stairs is just as difficult with a
pushchair as it is with a wheelchair.
A few particular aspects must be taken into consideration
so as to ensure that a floor covering is suitable for use
in buildings planned with universal accessibility. Tread
safety and slip resistance is a fundamental requirement,
so as to enable people with visual impairments or difficulty
walking to move around safely at all times. The surface
of floor coverings must not cause any annoying mirroring
or dazzling with backlighting. The majority of DLW floor
coverings are tread safe, have an anti-slip class of at least
R9 and a low level of gloss. In addition, they are hygienic
and easy to clean.
When building facilities with universal accessibility, the
pattern of the floor covering should be discreet enough
that there is no possibility of an annoying contrast. This
is because such a contrast would have the effect of a
shadow for those with visual impairments and would
lead to feelings of insecurity while walking. The selection
of the colour and brightness of the floor covering must
guarantee that there is sufficient contrast with the
surrounding environment, and must stand out clearly
from walls, doors or furniture, for example. You can find
out more about this topic at www.dlw.de .
Furthermore, pictograms and signs can be set into the
floor covering as inlays, helping to support orientation and
thereby contributing to making the building universally
accessible. We have some ideas for you at www.dlw.de .
“Universal accessibility is more than just wheelchair access!”Dr. Peter Müller, Chairman of the Management Board of the German Public Health Foundation
Not all wooden patterns are suitable as floor coverings in the healthcare sector. Woods with a pronounced texture and those that are very dark or very light could be off-putting. In images: the right-hand wood is better suited for universal accessibility, the left-hand one has too great a contrast.
Material: Vinyl Timberline
Creating buildings with universal accessibility
Selected floor coverings by DLW out of the Linoleum,
Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl range are suitable for all
buildings where universal accessability is required,
as they combine all necessary characteristics.
For people to feel comfortable, the top priorities are
cleanliness and hygiene. Floor coverings can contribute
to this if they are above all dirt resistant. They should
simultaneously be stain resistant and moisture resistant,
and should be easy and quick to clean.
Structural requirements
Nursing care homes and care homes have many different
types of rooms, all of which have very different uses from each
other. There are, for example, residential units, communal
kitchens or canteens, communal rooms, workshops and
public spaces. Floor coverings with completely impervious
and joint-tight seals are recommended in particular for
rooms with high levels of humidity. This can be done by
installing flooring made of vinyl or linoleum and then fusing
or making the joints watertight. Floors laid in this way
can also be easily cleaned with cleaning materials and
disinfectants.
In nursing care homes and care homes many other
structural factors must also be taken into account:
awkward light reflections and smoothly polished floors
can become insurmountable obstacles for residents.
The design of lighting is thus of huge importance in care
homes, as is proper cleaning and maintenance. The colour
scheme itself must also be carefully considered, as some
floor colours are totally unsuitable for care homes. For
visually impaired residents, floor surfaces that are coloured
blue, for example, can look like water, with the result that
some residents may be too afraid to walk on the floor or
even show fear of it.
A further important aspect in nursing care homes and care
homes is the sound proofing of rooms. Floor coverings can
make a significant contribution to this, too, and it is possible
to achieve a sound reduction of up to 18 dB with our floor
coverings. In addition, all DLW floor coverings offer anti-
slip class R9. For work areas that stipulate a higher anti-
slip class, we recommend, for example, Favorite R10. With
special cleaning products from cc Dr. Schutz, all DLW floor
coverings can be upgraded to class R10.
Due to its natural composition, DLW Linoleum has
antibacterial properties: the growth of bacteria is reduced
and hygiene is thereby improved in a natural way – this has
been confirmed by the independent ISEGA test institute
(www.isega.de). Our DLW Vinyl floor coatings also offer
no contact surfaces on which bacteria and moulds can
take hold, and this has been tested in accordance with DIN
EN ISO 846, part C.
Requirements of floor covering
10 | Hygiene, cleaning and maintenance – structural requirements
Cleaning of different floor coverings
All DLW floor coverings may be cleaded with the
same cleaning system, allthough they are of different
collections and ranges. This occures in the PUR Eco
System surface.
The surfaces of all our floor coverings are refined in the last
stage of production. The topically applied coating makes
them resistant to moisture and abrasive dirt. At the same
time, this makes them easier to clean.
Surface treated with LPX Finish
Due to the natural composition of linoleum, we offer the tried
and tested surface finish LPX Finish to guarantee the best
protection of the floor covering. It is especially suited for
areas which are expected to be subjected to continual heavy
use that can cause blemishes and scratches in the flooring:
for example in entrance areas, workshops for disabled
people, educational facilities and communal rooms. LPX
Finish makes floors resistant to moisture and dirt.
Even greater protection with PUR Eco system
DLW Linoleum, DLW Vinyl and also the Scala Design floor
tiles are treated with the permanent, UV-hardened and
“DLW Linoleum from DLW Flooring is produced almost entirely from renewable raw materials. According to the ecological assessment I have drawn up, linoleum can be recommended unrestrictedly as far as sustainability is concerned.”Prof. Manfred Hegger, Technical University of Darmstadt, Architecture Department
the hardened finish of the PUR Eco system. This surface
protection is resistant to dirt and can be cleaned at very
low cost. It is especially suitable for hygienically challenging
areas such as, for example, hospital or nursing rooms, as
the surface is resistant against all commonly used cleaning
materials and disinfectants (see comparisons in the table
below). Moreover, surfaces treated with PUR Finish need no
further initial treatment. In addition, linoleum can be treated
with the PUR Eco System or LPX Finish.
Regardless of the finish you choose, DLW floor coverings
can be cleaned easily and hygienically. Less water and
cleaning products are needed and this means that both
the environmental impact and financial costs are reduced.
The DLW Flooring floor coverings thus make a valuable
contribution to the improvement of the environmental
balance of a building over its whole life cycle.

Simple cleaning
Even combined surfaces with different DLW floor
coverings, such as linoleum with the PUR Eco System,
Scala or vinyl can all be cleaned using the same cleaning
agent and the same cleaning procedure.
Cost efficiency
The cost efficiency of a floor cannot be determined from
the purchase price. The long-term maintenance costs
are far more relevant than the purchase costs: these
can account for up to 80% of the overall costs given an
average usage period of several decades. In addition to
a hard-wearing nature and durability, easy cleaning plays
a central role here. Resilient floor coverings are easier

to keep clean than textile floors, and the cost-effective
surface protection with the PUR Eco System makes them
even more low maintenance. Correct cleaning contributes
to the floor retaining its value in the long term, as confirmed
by the independent test institute FIGR.
What is more, all flexible DLW floor coverings are also
resistant to the surface disinfectants set out in the
list of disinfectants from the German Association for
Applied Hygiene (www.vah-online.de ). Floors with a
PUR Eco System surface protection will even withstand
alcohol-based disinfectants.

Since 1979, the independent Forschungs- und Prüfinstitut für Facility Management
GmbH (FIGR) has been conducted laboratory and application-specific quality
tests of cleaning and care products, floor coverings, devices, machines and dirt

The living environment for special people
We laugh a lot here! People with learning disabilities
radiate an amazing amount of joy. Even though some of
them are quite weak, the inner strength of these people
is very moving. Over 70% of people with an intellectual
disability also have a physical disability, so that, for
example, their mobility, and/or their ability to see or hear
can be impaired. This must be taken into account with
holistic interior design. Linoleum contributes to making
living spaces universally accessible, for example with
tread security, or with its sound-reducing qualities and
its pleasant warmth underfoot - all these characteristics
are natural features of linoleum. In the support in living
and care group of Pforzheim Enzkreis e.V., people with

the most severe multiple disabilities are cared for and
their abilities are maintained and developed to help
them cope with everyday life. The day care rooms offer
different experiences that help to support the residents
– for example, music, basal stimulation, occupational
therapy and artistic activities. The ability to change rooms
quickly, so that they can be used for another purpose at
short notice, is very important for the changing needs of
care homes. For this reason, many items of furniture are
equipped with castors. One thing is extremely important
when considering all functionality: the environmental
space should be as normal as possible for people with the
most severe multiple disabilities.

“When we were planning, we really wanted to create a warm, inspiring environment. The colour and materials stimulate the senses and support our therapeutic work.”Angela Schwalb-Geißel, Remedial therapist and Therapeutic teacher, Administration of the Support in living and care group
Allergies
Many people have an allergic reaction to cat hairs, particular food stuffs, medicines or to particular metals, such
as nickel. The health problems are not due to the harmfulness of the materials, but to the oversensitivity of certain
individuals. Many people suffer from an allergy to house dust. In most cases, this concerns fine dust that is released
into the room following air turbulence. We therefore recommend the use of vacuum cleaners with micro filters.
There are generally no harmful component parts in DLW floor coverings.
Material: Linoleum Linorette
There are now a large number of nursing care homes and
care homes which need to fulfil the basic human need
for privacy but at the same time include the opportunity
for company and communication. Residential group
concepts with the most wide ranging characteristics
have been standard for a long time. Residents in the
Torenhoeve Hellevoetsluis in the Netherlands are offered
the opportunity, for example, to look after themselves on a
daily basis, or they can use round the clock services if they
want. A conscious effort is being made to use appropriate
interior design to support a wide range of environments.
This project originated in the Dutch archictects’ office,
Ziggurat, in Heenvliet.
Scientific evidence from the fields of gerontology and
psychology has brought about a change in thinking about
architecture for older people, and is influencing interior
design. The interior design of small care units is being
influenced by the normal home environment that older
people are used to, with their warm colours and familiar
designs. Greater use is being made of natural materials
Living in old age
such as linoleum or wood. Floor covering is thus an
important basis for for the creation of a homely effect in a
room. Wood effect flooring is particularly popular, followed
by flooring in natural colours and natural structures. To help
people move around the buildings more intuitively, the type
of flooring can be of particular importance by signifying
quiet areas, communal areas and care areas within the
across the whole of the residential area.
So that transitional areas (where there is a change from one
area to another) with different flooring do not cause any
optical contrasts, DLW floor coverings are distinguished
from each other by colour across all the product ranges.
When used in daily life, it is particularly advantageous that
our linoleum, vinyl flooring and Scala Design floor tiles are
all the same height, as well as being consistently easy to
clean.
You can find our product recommendations on page 24 or
at www.dlw.de.

Dementia illnesses
Approximately 1.4 million people in Germany are affected by dementia. The most
common form is Alzheimer’s disease. People with dementia need special care concepts
that are oriented to their needs. They also need a suitable environment – one that has a
calming effect and has the familiarity of home. There is a lot of information to be found
on this topic from the German Alzheimer Society e.V. at www.deutsche-alzheimer.de

18 | 19 Types of facility – Institute for the Blind, Regensburg
The Institute for the Blind in Regensburg is also a school and
boarding school for blind and visually impaired children and
young people, as well as for those with multiple disabilities.
In the buildings that have already been designed with great
care and thoughtfulness, the children are able to learn to
find their way about without using the guiding systems
that were traditionally used for blind people. Instead, use
is made of lighting scenes, room acoustics, contrasts,
height differences and different floor coverings. The
single-storey and two-storey buildings of the Berlin-based
architects Georg-Scheel-Wetzel are arranged in ‘fingers’ of
the building that fan out on a slope and are connected by
a main corridor. This corridor is bigger than the corridors
that branch off it and thus has a very particular, echoing
surround sound. Stud sheets denote obstacles such as
steps and lifts. Contrasts are also used to good effect –
long striplights light the corridors, and raster lights denote
junctions and doors. In public places there is a cold shell
limestone floor, but as a contrast to this, communal rooms
and classrooms are denoted by soft, warm linoleum floors
with underfloor heating. Each wing of the school is defined
with a strong colour, and this helps with orientation.
“Colours do not just have an effect on our souls and on our emotional lives – they can also help us find our way about. Even visually impaired people will be able to notice strong contrasts and distinctive colours.”Prof. Christine Nicki-Weller, TU Berlin Faculty VI Architecture for Health,Munich-based Architects Nickl & Partners Architects AG
The architects chose the classic linoleum Uni Walton in beige, orange, red, red-brown and dark green for the wings of the building. These natural colours were the first choice for the flooring to reflect the tendency of children to like sitting on the ground sometimes. Furthermore, DLW Linoleum can be laid over an underfloor heating system.

Naturally hygienic
Thanks its natural composition, DLW Linoleum is antibacterial. The amount and
growth of bacteria is reduced so that hygiene is promoted in a natural way. This
has been confirmed by the independent test institute ISEGA (www.isega.de).
Our DLW Vinyl floor coverings do not provide any opportunities for bacteria and
mould fungus to grow.

The TrygFondens home for families is a patient hotel for
families with seriously ill children who are being treated
in the new university clinic in the Danish Aarhus. The
architects C.F. Møller, based in Aarhus, have designed
a psychological oasis, a place of rest and relaxation for
the families, which almost exudes the atmosphere of a
lovely holiday home. The building is in a clearance in a
newly planted forest north of the clinic complex and the
children’s ward is only a few minutes’ walk away. The white
rendered facade with oak-cladding is in strong contrast to
the red brick facade of the clinic. The circular layout of

the building offers spaces both for much needed private
space and also for space to share joy and sorrow with
other residents. The apartments are on the outer periphery
and look out onto the unspoiled countryside. They are
connected by a corridor which has large areas of glass
and which opens onto the green inner courtyard. Each
apartment has a kitchen unit and there is also a communal
kitchen and a lounge with a fireplace. The interior design

Acoustic solutionsSpecial Linoleum acoustic solutions can achieve an improvement in sound absorption from 14 to 18 dB in accordance with DIN EN 140-8. In addition to this, DLW Flooring also offers flooring made of a composite with a natural sublayer made of cork or with polyurethane foam backing. A sound absorption reduction of 17dB is also possible with flooring made from a vinyl composite. In other words, renovation work can minimise noise levels caused by structural defects, or the problem can be solved using general noise reducing measures.

Linoleum is the only resilient floor covering available on the market that is made predominantly from natural, sustainable raw materials. DLW Linoleum contains 98% organic or mineral raw materials, of which 80% are naturally sustainable. There is hardly any other floor covering that has been awarded so many environmental certificates.
With the right care, DLW floor coverings will last for many
years. However, repair or replacement may be necessary
as a result of inappropriate use or during renovation work.
Fast repair
It is no problem to make repairs to the floor covering,
for example to remove scratches and small holes in the
linoleum. Thanks to the robust and durable PUR Eco System
surface protection, small scratches can be removed with
a cleaning spray and subsequent polishing. In the case of
floor coverings from the Scala range, it is even possible to
replace individual boards. However, it may be enough to
renew the surface protection with the PUR Eco System.
Simple replacement
We offer a lifetime guarantee on the colours in our range
that are particularly in demand and especially relevant.
That means you will be able to obtain these colours even
years after the construction project has been completed,
allowing you to plan for the long term. The floor coverings
can be replaced without stopping work. The floor can be

walked on as normal just a short time after it has been laid
(generally after 48 hours).
Sustainable application, sustainable recycling
Our floors fit into the concept of a “green hospital”:
sustainable and forward-looking healthcare facilities
pay equal attention to ecological aspects, cost-effective
potential for savings and comfort and convenience for
patients and employees. Consequently, the materials
used are of great significance when building new hospitals
and renovating existing ones.
Thanks to its overwhelmingly natural, renewable raw
materials, disposing of DLW Linoleum does not present
a problem: it is biodegradable and rots down without
harming the environment - thermal disposal takes place
without generating CO2. DLW Vinyl is also fully recyclable
and is used to manufacture new vinyl products. You can
find out more about recycling our floor coverings online.

Product overview
Linoleum is an uncomplicated classic among floor coverings. The environmentally-
friendly covering is made up almost entirely of natural raw materials, the large majority
of which are renewable. It is particularly durable and naturally antibacterial. Thanks to
modern surface treatments, linoleum is very easy to clean and maintain. DLW Linoleum
is available as a sheet product that can be sealed to create a surface with no joints.
Naturecore is a natural design floor covering containing 18 realistic wooden designs,
available as planks in the format of 120 x 20 cm. This floor covering is good for everything:
the climate of the room, for health and the environemnt. Naturecore contains out of
natural raw materials only and is free of softeners and PVC.
Our DLW luxury vinyl design floor tiles interpret wood and stone, and there are also
refined textures and striking single colours available. Large board formats ensure
maximum authenticity. Compared to genuine materials, DLW luxury vinyl is significantly
less sensitive, more hygienic and easier to clean. What is more, the design floor tiles
are robust and have a long usage life. We offer wearing layers in various thicknesses to
suit the different areas of use.
Fibrebonded is an extremely hard-wearing textile floor covering made from needled
synthetic fibres – for busy areas that are subject to high stresses. Thanks to its
footfall sound reducing properties, fibrebonded is popular in office spaces. It is
available as a sheet product or in tile format.
We draw together our plastic floor coverings with diverse visual and functional
properties under the heading of DLW Vinyl. These floor coverings are extremely robust
and durable. We make a distinction between homogeneous and heterogeneous
variants: homogeneous means that the floor covering consists of just one layer and all
the material can be used (worn away). Heterogeneous coverings have a transparent
