Air Barrier paperAir barrier paper is a continuous polyolefin membrane under the siding that controls air and water penetration. It is permeable to water vapor, but not to liquid water or air.
Attic VentilationPromotes air movement that evaporates any moisture that condenses in the roof space and prevents heat during the summer.
Soffit Vent
Ridge Vent
Gable Vent
Roof Turbine
BackhoeA piece of excavating equipment that consists of a digging bucket on the end of an extending arm. The bucket can vary in size depending on the job needed. This bucket measures 4’ across and is being used to dig a ditch.
Batter Boards•Made of wood (typically) these boards are nailed together in correlation with plumb bobs to show a building’s outline.•Establish the building’s outline, staying 4’ away from estimated dimension to allow for excavation.
Roman Arch
Jack Arch
Roman Arch with a keystone
Centering
Temporary formwork for a brick arch.
Brick BondsRunning Bond – the courses are offset stretchers
Flemish Bond - the courses alternate between headers and stretchers
Rowlocks Headers
Soldiers Stretcher rowlocks “Shiners”
Brick Sizes Modular 3 ½” x 7 ½” x 2 ¼‘”
Utility3 ½ x 11 ½ x 3 ½
Bulldozera powerful tractor fitted with caterpillar tracks and a blade at the front, used for moving dirt or debris. Not used to lift dirt.
Cladding
Brick Stone
EIFS (stucco)
Wood Shingle•Wood shingle - small unit of wood nailed in overlapping fashion to render a wall water tight.•Wood shake – Shingle split from a block of wood

Stairs
Sorry for the crappy picture, used my phone
Riser: 7 ¾”
Tread: 11”
Nosing: ¾”
Survey says: This staircase checks out
Concrete jointsLOL FAILControl joints – an intentional discontinuity used to control cracks caused by shrinkage of concrete during curation.
Isolation JointCompletely isolate the slab from another piece or object, normally a column
Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU)
Three courses = One course
4” CMU
12” CMU
A block of hardened concrete designed to be laid in the same way as brick. CMU’s are normally hollow to allow further reinforcing through holes in the middle. They come in varying sizes from 4” Iin depth, to 12” in depth.
Decorative CMU Blocks
Split Block Ribbed Block
Doors
Flush Door
Doors
6 Panel Door Sidelight Transom
Electrical ComponentsTransformer – steps down electricity to 110/220V AC from the generator to the house.
Electrical ElementsService Head – Sends the two hot wires and one neutral wire through the meter to the service panel.
Electrical Components
Meter – measures power usage of the building
Electrical ComponentsService Panel – contains a main disconnect and circuit breakers
Electrical ComponentsDuplex Receptacle – allows appliances to be plugged into the power source.
Framing Elements1. Anchor Bolt2. Sill Plate - Sits on top of foundation
3. Floor joists
4. Subflooring
5. Sole plate
6. Stud
7. Top plate
8. Stringer
9. Ceiling joists
10. Rafters
11. Sheathing
12. Roof decking
Front End LoaderAn earthmoving machine with a hydraulic scoop in front for lifting and loading earth or rubble with the ability to travel across site.
Gypsum BoardAn interior facing panel consisting of a gypsum core sandwiched between paper faces. Gypsum is very resistant to fire.
Heat PumpCompressor – pulls air in from outdoors and pumps into the air handling unit
Air Handling Unit – Sends air through vents to heat/cool house
An advantage is it’s ability to rapidly heat or cool house. A disadvantage is that it is noisy.
Insulation a material of low thermal conductivity placed to slow heat loss or gain from outside. Also helps with sound
control.Fiberglass Batts Cellulose Loose-fill
Rigid board
Foamed insulation
LintelA piece of metal or concrete that transfers the load above windows or doors to the surrounding walls.
Mortar
ConcaveType S mortar for parking deck, 3/8” tooled joint
Mortar
FlushType N mortar for a retaining wall, 3/8” tooled joint
OSBHome Depot was on the lookout, so I had to be sneaky.OSB is a non veneered wood product that is manufactured by orienting strands in perpendicular layers followed by random end layers, glued together, and put under immense pressure which give OSB it’s strength.
Plumbing
Lavatory – uses ½” piping Water closet – uses 3” piping
Plumbing
Rough-in showerVent – vents noxious sewer gases safely into the air
PlumbingDrop-in sink
Plywood
Plywood is manufactured by literally unrolling a tree by it’s layers. The tree is then sliced into different size pieces, cured, and sold.
Radiant Barrier
NO PICTURE! WHERE THE ****? I KNOW I PUT IT IN HERE! No, wait a minute, I couldn’t find this one…
RebarThis is ½” rebar and would therefore be referred to as #4 rebar.
The purpose for the deformations in the surface of the rebar is so that it adheres to the concrete surrounding it.
Steep Roof Drainage
Gutter - A trough fixed under or along the eaves for draining rainwater from a roof.
Down spout - a vertical pipe used to drain rainwater from a roof
Steep Roof DrainageSplash block - A pad placed under the lower end of a downspout to divert the water from the downspout away from the building and to avoid erosion directly below downspout.
Steep Roof MaterialsShingle underlayment – creates a waterproof barrier between sheathing and shingles that protects against backed up or wind driven rain under shingles and into the house.
Steep Roof Materials
Clay shingles
Steep Roof MaterialsShingle - A thin oblong piece of material, such as wood or slate, that is laid in overlapping rows to cover the roof or sides of a house or other building. It protects against water penetration.
Copper shingles were used in the construction of this steeple.
Steep Roof Materials
Metal decking for roofs normally consist of Aluminum and Tin.
Steep Roof Shapes
Gable Hip
Steep Roof Shapes
Gambrel Mansard
Steep Roof Terms
Ridge - the point where the rafters meet.
Valley - The place of meeting of two slopes of a roof, which have their plates running in different directions.
Steep Roof Terms
Eave – projecting overhang
Rake - The inclined edge of a sloped roof over a wall.
Steep Roof Terms
Fascia - A flat, horizontal board enclosing the overhang under the eave
SoffitCover the eave of a roofing system.
Steep Roof Terms
Roof without Fascia
Stone
Random Rubble Coursed Ashlars
StoneRandom Ashlars
Vapor RetarderA layer of moisture resistant material usually which controls moisture diffusion to prevent moisture build up in the walls. Normally put on the cold in winter side of the wall.
WaterProofing
NO! Not again!!!!!!! Why? Why? WHY??? WHY???? WHY????? I hate
this part. -1 point
Weep Hole
Welded Wire Fabric (WWF)Welded Wire Fabric reinforce the concrete to prevent cracking. This particular piece is roughly 16’ by 8’.
Windows
This is an inward swinging hopper window because it has its hinges on the bottom and swings in but doesn’t allow water in.
This is a double hung window, because both panes (top and bottom) are free to slide up and down.
WindowsThis is an out swinging awning window because the hinges are on top of the window to allow it to swing outward over an awning.
Thanks, hopefully this will get enough bonus points to avoid an
embarrassing B…
