II. Plagiarism: UBC Definition

UBC Policy 83.4.3 Scholarly Integrity:

“Plagiarism” means presenting and using

another’s published or unpublished work,

including theories, concepts, data, source

material, methodologies or findings, including

graphs and images, as one’s own, without

appropriate referencing.

12

Plagiarism: Tips for avoiding it Get started early to avoid panic situations which might tempt you to plagiarize.

Take careful notes on what you read and where you found the ideas (use Refworks

to track sources).

Acknowledge ALL Sources from which you use ideas. This includes books, journal

articles, websites, e-mail communication, listserv, film, videos, audio recordings, etc.

Always cite:

Direct quotations taken from sources (place quotation marks “” around direct quotes as you write them down to remember which are direct quotes and

which are not)

Paraphrased ideas, summaries of ideas, and opinions taken from someone else's work

Factual information, including statistics or other data – with the exception of

anything that is considered common knowledge (i.e. well known facts like "British

Columbia is a province in Canada").

13

Plagiarism: Tips for assessing it

When reviewing your paper, ask yourself :

Is the idea or argument presented mine?

Are the words my own?

Can my work be clearly distinguished from the work of others?

14

Plagiarism: will we check it?

Yes!!!

15

Plagiarism: disciplinary measures

Academic misconduct often results in a one-year suspension from the

University and a notation of academic discipline on the student's record. However, disciplinary measures which may be imposed, singly or in combination,

for academic misconduct include, but are not limited to the following:

a letter of reprimand

a failing grade or mark of zero on the assignment or in the course in which the

academic misconduct occurred

suspension, cancellation, or forfeiture of any scholarships, bursaries or prizes

suspension from the University for a specified period of time

expulsion from the University

revocation of a degree or other academic credentials dishonestly or improperly

obtained

III. Assignment 1 Grading Rubrics

Each student and student group will be graded on the following:

Class Presentation (TA, Instructor, and Class Evaluations) = 35%

Present an informed and organized overview of your chosen topic. Presentations will be graded

on both content (focus, organization, order, completeness, relevance, knowledge, etc.) and

presentation style (voice projection, professionalism, ability to engage audience, etc.)

Team Evaluation = 35%

Team evaluations will be completed by your fellow team members. Each team member will be

evaluated on attendance to team meetings, group cohesion, productivity and focus,

constructive ideas and feedback, quality of work, and quantity of work. Please provide accurate

and constructive criticism (i.e. do not give every team member 100% in every area!).

Two Page Summary = 35%

The two page summary should also provide an informed and organized overview of your chosen

topic. The summary should inform the class and complement your presentation; it should not,

however, be identical to your presentation. Use the summary to demonstrate the research you’ve

conducted, including key citations. Also include useful graphics, charts, figures, graphs, etc. -

either those you created (preferred) or those found while conducting your research.
