Professional development & guidance in Finland

Preliminary Findings

• Experiences of Finnish learning culture inspire the participants – concepts of learning and teaching are transformed

• Learning by doing (practicing new methods) builds motivation

• Networking with the Finnish teachers deepens understanding and professional growth

• Encouragement in guidance is essential – peer guidance and Finnish teacher educators guidance

• Designing the dissemination of innovation for their own schools is experienced as challenging

Professional Development & Guidance in Brazil Piloting new methods – educating colleagues – involving leaders – networking with

each other sharing experiences – online guidance meetings

Own development project – related to educational innovation

The Process in Brazil

Data collection and analyses going on – but we can already see that…

• Peer support and networked learning community are essential – Virtual experience sharing in social media

• Finnish teacher educators can empower and encourage the teachers to make changes

Research on Teachers’ Strategies to Transfer Their Learning

Efficient Strategies Used• Most of the participants positioned themselves as strategic actors,

champions using the definition of Mantere (2003).

• The champions were planning to use concrete techniques like workshops, developing learning environments and engaging learning projects, using communication tools like media and storytelling.

• Some saw themselves at their best in the classroom using their new competences, even allowing the students to spread the good word of mouth and acting as citizens (Mantere, 2003) in the strategy process of pedagogical change (Mahlamäki-Kultanen et al., 2015).

Mantere, S (2003). Champion, citizen, cynic? Social positions in the strategy process. HUT Industrial Management and Work and Organizational Psychology Dissertation Series No.5, Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo.

Ryymin, E. & Kunnari, I. (2015). Developing Networked Expertise for Educational Innovations - Brazilian Teachers in Finnish Learning Environment. Paper presented in International Conference of Education (LICE-2015), 9.-11.11. 2015, London.

Research on Networked Expertise Supporting Educational Innovations

Kunnari, I., & Ilomäki, L. (2014). Reframing teachers’ work for educational innovation. Innovations in Education and Teaching International, (ahead-of-print), 1-12.doi.org/10.1080/14703297.2014.978351

• Brazilian teachers’ networked expertise in the Finnish Learning Environment empowers the development and implementation of educational innovations, but the transformation of educational communities and the dissemination of educational innovations are still very complex phenomena.

• After the training program, the supportive network and networked expertise expanded into the Brazilian Learning Environment is essential for sustaining and contextualizing educational innovations.

and developers, joint research interests• Research supporting educational change and

implementation• Integrating research in international teacher

training programmes
