Chapter 1
The research group
1.1 Scope and objectives
The objective of the PATS research group is to design, study and implement advanced telecommuni-cation systems with emphasis on the systems performance aspects. Through modeling and analysis(analytical, simulation and experimental), the impact of performance issues on various design andimplementation choices is investigated.
1.2 Research topics
PATS is performing basic research, applied research and contract research related to the researchtheme of ’performance analysis of telecommunication systems and its impact on the architecture andthe design of these systems’. The basic research activities of the PATS research group are structuredinto four major areas:
• Stochastic models for the performance analysis of telecommunication systems, in particular
– Modelling of traffic streams
– Study of application relevant queueing models
– Matrix-analytic methods for the solution of large and complex Markov chains
– Algorithmic aspects of stochastic modelling
• Mobile and wireless communication systems, in particular
– MAC protocols for wireless access networks
– Efficient handover schemes in mobile IP networks
– Routing in ad hoc networks
– QoS support for mobile networks
• Medium Access Control (MAC protocols), with special attention to
– MAC for Passive Optical Networks (EPON)
– MAC for HFC networks (EURO-DOCSIS)
– MAC for ad hoc networks
3
PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (PATS) 4
– Contention resolution protocols
• Traffic management in multi-service networks, more specific
– Mechanisms for QoS support
– Packet scheduling schemes
– Admission Control and congestion control (TCP)
– Buffer management mechanisms.
• Provisioning and architecture to make software adaptable and dependable:
– System structures for adaptive mobile applications
– Architectures for adaptive and fault-tolerant mobile systems
– Design methodologies for adaptive-and-dependable systems
The expertise developed in these basic research activities is then applied into various European, national and regional research projects with an important industrial involvement.
The PATS research group is one of the groups that are involved in the Interdisciplinary Institutefor Broadband Technology (www.ibbt.be) which was founded by the Flemish government on March19th of 2004.
1.3 Scientific, social and/or technological relevance of the research
The research themes of the PATS group have a high level of scientific, social and technological rele-vance, as illustrated in what follows.
Recent technological key advances in telecommunications, such as the internet (a new communi-cation paradigm), broadband local access (bringing broadband to the home by DSL and cable), mobilecommunications (like GSM, UMTS and Wireless LAN allowing connectivity anywhere and anytime)have been made possible, among others, by the results of research on new, highly flexible networkarchitectures, protocols and applications. The rate at which new technological solutions are producedhas never been higher than today, just refer to sensor networks, the internet of things, the applica-tion of ICT in the health sector, etc The above technologies are exactly those that PATS addresses. Moreover, the performance of these technologies is one of the major characteristics that determinetheir economical success. Clearly this technological progress has a major social impact. The moderntelecommunication means makes distance and time difference no longer a burden for communicating. This has not only important economical consequences, but has an major social impact by bringingpeople together who live far away from each other, by forming all kind of communities, etc
The European research programs (e.g. RACE, ACTS, IST) aim at promoting world class researchin key priority areas as identified in their framework programs and to furthering the integration of re-search in Europe. These programs focus action in priority thematic research areas, a number of whichin the ICT area are closely related to the themes the PATS research group is addressing: broadband forall, mobile and wireless communication, ). This has allowed the PATS group to be actively involvedin several EU joint research projects (see Chapter 3).
The technological, industrial and economical importance for Flanders of research on telecommu-nication systems is illustrated by the fact that in 2004 the Flemish Government has founding the Inter-disciplinary Institute for BroadBand Technologies (IBBT) (see www.ibbt.be). The mission of IBBT isto provide highly competent specialists in different aspects of the broadband technology and to carry

out multi-disciplinary research for the Flemish business community and the Flemish government. TheIBBT unites 17 research groups from different Flemish universities based on their complementary inexpertise, excellence in their field of expertise and have their long tradition of co-operation with com-panies for result driven research. The PATS research group was invited from the start to join the IBBT.Furthermore, the Flemish Council for Research (VRWB) has identified five priorities within the Flem-ish research innovation, one of which is ICT , where communication technologies (a.o. wireless andmobile networks)take a prominent place.
Since a few years, the group has started an activity that focuses on communication services thatimpact on society as a whole, and which are designed so as to maximize each users quality of experi-ence. We all know that society is rapidly moving into the Information age, a path that already now hasconsiderably changed our attitudes and behaviors. In parallel, Europe is facing unprecedented chal-lenges such as cost-effective healthcare for all his citizens in a society that can hardly cope with theincreasing number of emerging health threats. We are convinced that the steady growth of telecom-munication services will be able to balance the visible increase in societal demands, e.g. in healthcare, provided that novel approaches and services are conceived. Our vision is that such services and ap-proaches should be coupling ICT with society; should be multi-disciplinary in nature; and should befocused on the user. Our team is currently laying the foundations of the basic building blocks forsuch an inter-reality healthcare management system. The societal relevance of such services is alsowitnessed e.g. by the recently awarded first prize at the IBM Service Innovation Student Contest 2007and by the publication of research papers in the proceedings of top-level scientific venues such as theACM Symposium on Applied Computing and the IEEE International Symposium on Computer-BasedMedical Systems.
1.4 Strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats
StrengthsThe activities of the PATS group consist of a balanced mix between theoretical, more fundamentalresearch on performance modelling of communication systems and architectural issues for adaptablesoftware on the one hand, and more practical and application oriented design and implementation ofcommunication protocols on the other hand.WeaknessesThe activities of the group can be divided into three main parts: methods and tools for performanceevaluation (mainly queueing theoretical models and efficient algorithms to solve them), design, anal-ysis and implementation of communication systems and finally (an activity that started a few yearsago) provisioning and architectures to make software adaptable and dependable. During the last tenyears most of the effort (resources, manpower) has been put into the second activity and moreover thefirst two activities have somewhat diverged. This evolution may put the specific mission (by which wediffer from other research groups in Flanders) of the group into danger. Furthermore, the last activityshould also be interact with the other research themes.OpportunitiesSince the PATS research group is part of the IBBT, it is offered many opportunities to collaboratewith industrial partners in research projects. Moreover, belonging to an institute like IBBT (in spiteof the fact that it exists less than 4 years) creates possibilities to act as a partner in EU consortia. TheIBBT has a large test facility (called the i-lab). This test lab is available to the participating groupsand allows to perform experiments on a large testbed.
PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (PATS) 6
ThreatsHuman capital is the prime resource in a research environment. Finding Ph.D. students with theappropriate skills is a key prerequisite for the success of a research group. The problem to attractstudents who are interested in mathematical modeling and analytical performance evaluation methodsbecomes a problem. Moreover, most Flemish universities tend to put computer science in the facultyof Engineering. Since the University of Antwerp does not offer an Engineering curriculum, the de-partment of computer science remains in the faculty of Science. Therefore it is not always easy toattract engineering students to become member of the PATS research group.
1.5 Future research activities, objectives and strategy
The objectives as stated in 1.1 will not change in the near future. A number of new approaches thegroup will follow in the strategy to reach the objectives are:
• There will be an effort to bring the two activities, namely the more fundamental research ac-tivity of performance modeling and evaluation and the more applied research activity aroundthe design and implementation of communication systems, closer together through workshops, brainstorming sessions, etc. This should lead to a strengthening of the groups profile.
• Although currently 25% of the group members do not have the Belgian nationality, the groupwill try to attract more Ph.D. students from abroad, in particular for the mathematical modelingand performance evaluation activities.
• Table 1.8, members of the research group since 2003, clearly shows an annual growth in theresearch FTE of 15 to 35 %. By now the group should have a size that represents a critical masswithin the Flemish context. Although quality has always been a major concern, the fast growthand the need to find a lot of researchers in a short period have not always lead to an equivalentincrease in the quality. Therefore, in the coming years the groups will focus on strategies toincrease the quality of the work in order to keep its position in a highly competitive researchfield.
• Within the IBBT, the group is currently working towards a spin-off activity in the area of wire-less mesh networks. This should lead to the start of a new company mid 2008. Other spin-offactivities or valorization results (e.g. patents) will be encouraged among the members of thegroup.
Future research will focus on the following activities:
• Wireless and mobile networks: the group will focus on the design, performance evaluation (bysimulation but also using analytical modeling techniques), implementation and experimenta-tion of mesh networks, ad hoc networks, sensor networks both in a generic setting as for vari-ous application environments, such as intelligent traffic systems, body area networks, buildingautomation, etc
• Modeling of systems: the group will continue developing computational frameworks to assessthe performance of communication, computer, manufacturing and other systems. The method-ologies used when setting up these frameworks include structured Markov chains, branchingprocesses, Markov decision processes, queueing theory, scheduling techniques, mean field com-putations, combinatorial designs, etc. To improve the accessibility of these techniques we arealso involved in the development of plug-and-play software tools.
PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (PATS) 7
• Adaptive-and-dependable services: the group will focus on social and collaborative semanticservices, autonomic in nature and able to be dynamically reshaped after each user, regardlesshis/her ICT capability, awareness, and attitude. Service-oriented architectures to manage thechallenges imposed by these services, such as matching effectively functional (real-time) andnon-functional (soft real-time) requirements are being investigated and applied in contexts suchas healthcare and adaptive robotics.
