Basic FunctionsA function is a predefined formula that performs calculations using specific values in a particular order.

Parts of a Function

–Equal Sign–Function Name–Argument

Equal sign–basic syntax to create a formula with a function

Argument–contain the information you

want the formula to calculate, such as a range of cell references

– must be enclosed in parentheses. Individual values or cell references inside the parentheses are separated by either colons or commas.

>Colons create a reference to a range of cells. >Commas separate individual values, cell references,

and cell ranges in parentheses. If there is more than one argument, you must separate each argument by a comma.

Calculating Percentage

The basic formula for calculating a percentage is:

part/total = percentage

In Discounts: (for example) reduce a particular amount by 25% (Think of the 1 in the formula as a stand-in for 100%.)

To increase the amount by 25%, replace the minus sign in the formula with a plus sign.

Example:Say the earnings for your department are $2,342 in November and $2,500 in December. What is the percentage change in earnings between these two months?

Answer:Divide the difference between December and November earnings ($158) by the value of the November earning ($2,342).
