2.0 SAMPLING SUMMARY

• One hundred - Eighteen (118) soil samples and nineteen (19)• water rinse samples were collected at the Croyden TCE Site

- Bristol, PA from August 29, 1989 - September 28, 1989 fort screening by Photovac GC/PID. The soil samples collected

in 40 ml vials were brought back to the Edison facility foranalysis.

3.0 ANALYTICAL METHODS

jk_y Soil headspace analysis was conducted using two 10S50 anda 10S70 Photovac GC all equipped with a CP Sil-5 capillarycolumn, and a photoionization (PID) detector. GC conditionsand other materials used are listed in TABLE Z.

Each sample consists of one 40 ml VOA vial nearly full of. soil. A 10 gram aliquot of the soil sample was weighed

into a clean 40 ml VOA vial and approximately seventeenmilliters (17 ml) of distilled water was added to bring thetotal volume within the vial to 20 ml. The vial was thentightly capped and shaken vigorously for one minute andallowed to stand quiescent at room temperature"for one hourfor vapor-phase equilibrium to occur. A two hundred andfifty microliter (250 ul) aliquot of sample headspace wasthen injected into the Photovac.The chromatogram of each sample was compared to externalstandards for tentative identification and quantitation.The standards used for this analysis were Purgeables A andB each composed of 10 aromatic and 'chlorinated compounds ina 200 ppm mixture in methanol. Those compounds that can beidentified by the PID are summarized in TABLE ZZ.

3.0 ANALYTICAL METHODS (cent.)

Before analysis a five point calibration range from 0.5ppb to 25 ppb was run for each standard to determine theMDL (Method Detection Limit) , using a two hundred and fiftymicroliter (250 ul) injection volume. The total organics ofeach sample were quant itated using the area response ofbenzene.

All soil headspace concentrations were calculated usingthe revised formula:

Quality control measures performed for this analysisincluded: duplicate analyses, analysis of a distilled waterblank, syringe blanks, and one spiked sample. Duplicateanalyses were done on the these samples: AOS206, B05230,

I A O S 2 3 2 , A05235, A05342, A05350, A05351, A05356, A05371,A05378, A05390, A05397, A05411, A05420, and A05426. Thespiked sample (A05415) was spiked by adding 1.25 ul of thePurgeable A and B standard to the soil extract, equivalentto a 10 ppb concentration. After equilibrating for an hour,the spiked sample was run under the same conditions as theother samples. Syringe blanks were run before samples

Results for the Photovac GC/PID soil headspace analysis ofthe Croyden TCE Site samples are presented in TABLE III inunits of ug/kg (ppb) . Results for the water headspaceanalysis are presented in TABLE IV in units of ug/1 (ppb) .

The percent recoveries of the 10 ppb Purgeable A and Bstandard in the spiked sample 5415 were 100%, exceptfor the percent recoveries of 1,1-dichloroethylene,tetrachloroethylene, and ethylbenzene, which were 72%, 47%,and 36% respectively.
