Purpose of our COE
To identify priority areas and services and build these into a single Rehabilitation Center
of Excellence. Walton’s COE builds on specialty programs designed around
catastrophic rehabilitation diagnosis so that we are able to address complicated
rehabilitation needs as well as complex medical needs resulting in catastrophic
illnesses.

Evaluation Criteria
How Walton evaluates each element of the Center of Excellence
This is the Walton standard of excellence established for each criteria. Meeting three stars means we have exceeded nationally established industry standards for this element of the COE.
This benchmark means we have met the minimum standards of practice established by national industry norms or regulations when available, or by Walton historical standards.
One star indicates that this element of the Center of Excellence (COE) falls short of our minimum benchmark in one or more of the established criteria.
Physician Leadership
Walton’s Criteria for this element of the COE
Physician leadership is in place with appropriate qualifications and
certifications. Leadership has defined our programs and established strategies for
the delivery of care.

Board Certified Physicians in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and in Internal Medicine.
Physician leadership of Walton’s major program teams: Stroke, Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, and Amputation.
Leadership of outpatient physician practices: Wound Center, Pain Center, Behavioral Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Walton’s Criteria for this element of the COE
Nursing and therapy model is fully staffed with appropriate qualifications and
certifications. Retention of all staff is 85% or above. Staff productivity meets or
exceeds established benchmarks.

The Center conducts basic and applied research in the field of rehabilitation. All research meets the standards established
by the Federal Wide Assurance of the Office of Human Research Protections
(OHRP).
Research
Foster theoretically motivated rehabilitation research focused on issues relevant to human function;
Stimulate operations research with the objectives of improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of patient care outcomes;
Improve the quality of patient care by integrating research into ongoing clinical activities and involving treatment staff in clinical research; and
Establish education and training programs that foster the philosophy and methods of effective rehabilitation research.
