• Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries (States, Countries, Cities)

• Regions defined by similar characteristics (Corn Belt, Rocky Mountain region, Chinatown).

• Functional Regions

• Regions defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone coverage area).

• Vernacular or Perceptual Regions

• Regions defined by peoples perception (middle east, the south, etc.)

Formal Regions

• Regions that have a common cultural or physical feature

• Regions are defined by political boundaries

Cultural Feature: Chinatown; Latin America

Physical Feature: Rocky Mountain States, Corn Belt.

Political Boundaries: Cities, States, School Districts, Countries, Continents
