Project Timeline Overview

Pathway 1 Timeline and Syllabus

Area of Focus StatementAccording to Mills (2014), your statement should start with completing the following sentence “The purpose of this study is to….. (p. 70).”

Area of Focus StatementThe purpose of this study is to deepen students’

understanding of problem solving through the use of classroom discussions. Students in second grade struggle to explain how they solve addition and subtraction word problems and this study seeks to create a classroom community of learning that will provide students with direct access to ideas, relationships, strategies, and facts about math so they can effectively talk about their thinking and problem solving

A Good Focus Statement Should Provide the Reader With...

• Who: The participants who are involved.

• What: The issue or change and intervention.

• Why: So what? How does it impact learning?

• How: A description of the process/intervention.

Let’s Revisit our Example

Questions to Consider1. Who are the participants?2. What data will be collected and from whom will it be collected?3. Is this an area over which you control and can make changes?4. Is the topic manageable - not too narrow and not too broad? (Topic needs to be manageable.)5. Are the outcomes measurable? How will the researcher measure them?6. What does the researcher need to do in preparation – are there any skills that the researcher or his/her participants need to have before this change or innovation?7. What do you expect to happen? Have you considered other outcomes?
