Red Panda Bear

• The Red Panda is not a bear!!! They are found to be more closely related to the raccoon and skunk family.

IMPORTANT!!!

•Reddish fur with brown and black tail

APPEARANCE

•Markings are very similar to the raccoon

•White surrounding eyes and muzzle• Two reddish brown stripes across cheek

•Males weigh 10-14 pounds•Females weigh 6-10 pounds

• Head and body

have a length of

20-24 inches

• Bamboo forests of Himalayas and Myanmar where it is cool and moist

Where Do They Live?

• Home becoming threatened due to deforestation

• Higher altitudes similar to Giant Panda

•Red Panda’s are primarily

herbivores but will occasionally eat

meat

What Do They Eat?

• Bamboo• Bird eggs• Fruits• Small birds• Tree sap• Grass• Leaves

They also eat…

• Both nocturnal and crepuscular

• Very sensitive to heat• Extremely agile

and territorial

How Do They Behave?

• Cleans its fur like a cat• Rubs back and belly

against trees• Solitary except during

mating season

• Stands on hind legs to look bigger when feeling threatened

• Able to reproduce at 18 months

• Gestation period of 112 to 158 days

• Mid-June to late July

• One to four cubs

• Recognize cubs by smell

• Average life-span of 8 to 10 years
