Exchange Backup File
Exchange Backup files contains three most important database files:-
EDB:-stores user's mailboxes
STM:-store streamed native Internet content
LOG:-keeps transaction record
Why Backup is Required
For handling corruption or data loss situations effectively
Helpful in recovering suddenly deleted important files and folders
Can rescue your data from unpredictable failures such as power, virus, I/o errors
Can help in disaster database recovery
Accidently deleted user mailbox

Methods of Exchange Server Backup
Following are two methods which can be used to take backup of Exchange Server Data:
Online Backup
Offline Backup
Online Backup
In this backup method backups of Exchange databases files are done while Exchange services are running means no need to stop or shut down Exchange server for taking backup.
An online backup can be performed in following ways:
A Normal Backup is process to backs up the directory or Exchange store in its entirety, as well as the log files.
A Copy Backup is used to get a full backup of the directory or Exchange store without disturbing the state of on going incremental or differential backups.
An Incremental Backup backs up only the log files, and then purges them, means backs up the subset of the component that has changed since the last normal or incremental backup.
A Differential Backup backs up changes in the directory or Exchange store that have occurred since the last normal backup.
Offline Backup
In this backup method backups of Exchange files and folders are taken when Exchange services are not running, means server is shutdown. If services are not running, backup software can easily access to database files and can back them up.
Inbuilt Utility For Backup
NTBackup is a windows inbuilt utility that is basically used in backing up data for MS Exchange Server 2000/2003.
Windows Server Backup (WSBExchange.exe), an built-in utility in Windows 7 and later versions of Windows operating systems, is used for MS Exchange 2007/2010 Servers.
Except these inbuilt tools, there are some third party backup applications which can be used to backup data of Exchange Server.
Limitations of Inbuilt Utilities
NT Backup utility is not so much supportive for the heavy corruption in database
NT Backup utility is not applicable in hidden files and directories that are restricted from general user, Ex:-Home Directory
NT Backup cannot be used to back up registries on remote computers.
NT Backup has no scheduling capabilities of its own. It need an outside scheduler
WSBExchange.exe or Windows Server Backup tool makes VSS based backup only
Only supports to full backup, you can restore single information storage group but can not single database
How to Recover Exchange BKF
Several times due to major corruption in .bkf file, restoration of the essential data is not possible using the built-in tools. For solving such major problems there are some commercial application available for backing up data. Stellar Phoenix Exchange BKF Recovery utility is one of them. Some silent features of the product are:
Facilitates option to find BKF files in the system when user don't know the exact location of backup file.
Provides complete recovery of heavily damaged backup file in simple three steps.
Single or multiple database recovery from highly corrupted backup file.
There is no cost for trial version of the tool
Easily retrieves EDB, STM and LOG files.
Option to save scanned data for performing recovery later.
