Matthew 6:9-139 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’

Introduction

Matthew 6:12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

† This is the only section that has an explanation after the Lord’s prayer.† We must note the link between these passages.

Matthew 6:14-1514 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

1. Forgiven:

Matthew 6:12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

1.1. We are All Sinners

† The Bible affirms that we are all sinners and fallen beings (Romans 3:23).

† Sin separates and damages our relationship with the Lord (Isaiah 59:2).

† We thus deserve to suffer the consequences of our sins (Romans 6:23).

1.2. We Need God’s Forgiveness

† We truly need to be forgiven by God for all our sins for we need it (Psalm 130:3).

† We must repent & seek God’s forgiveness that we may be forgiven by Him (Acts 3:19).

1.3. God Forgives Us

† God has forgiven us through the works of Christ on our behalf (Ephesians 1:7).

† We receive God’s forgiveness through confession (1 John 1:9).

2. Forgiving:

Matthew 6:12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

2.1 Forgiving because Forgiven:

Matthew 6:14-1514 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Hebrews 12:1515 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

2.2 Parable of Forgiveness

Matthew 18:21-22, 35 (Read Matthew 18:21-35)21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times…35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

2.3. Forgiving like God:

Colossians 3:1313 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. (Read also Ephesian 4:31-32)

2.4 Forgive Like Christ:

Luke 23:34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
