REACTIONS IN A BAG INVESTIGATION

Chemistry G BTrimester 2

Background This investigation involves the mixing of four reagents in a plastic

bag. When all are mixed, a chemical reaction will occur.

You are responsible for identifying the evidence of a chemical reaction and which reactant or combination of reactants is responsible for that

observation.

1. Mass 5 grams of calcium carbonate (A).

Mass 2.5 grams of sodium bicarbonate.

2. Place the two solid reactants inside the bag together on the

left side of the bag.

Place the liquids (5mL of water and 20 drops of phenol red) on the right side of the bag.

They should not mix at this point.

3. Make sure the bag has very little air inside it and

seal it.

4. Mix the contents of the bag thoroughly. (Open the bag to release pressure if needed.)

5. Make observations about the changes taking place.

6. We know what happens when all four reagents are mixed, but which one or combination of reactants

explain the various observations? Create a list of control tests using different

combinations to determine the role of each reactant. These can be done qualitatively.
