About us…
K. J. Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training and Research, established on 29th August 1990 as a Gujarati Linguistic Minority Institution, is one of the 35 institutions in Somaiya Vidyavihar. Placed in a premier location on a sprawling 60 acre campus abuzz with the activities of 27,000 students and 1600 faculty members, the institution has been through two cycles of NAAC accreditation and is permanently affiliated to the University of Mumbai. It is also privileged to be recognized by UGC under 12B. The college, since its inception, has reached new heights of excellence and achievements. With the mission to empower the teachers to become excellent human resource and to contribute meaningfully to the nation and the human society, the institution has been tirelessly working because of which it is known to be a premier institution of teacher education in Mumbai. Our college has a rich tradition of pursuing academic excellence, value based education and providing a conducive environment for the overall development of the students and teachers. It provides a variety of enriching experiences and exposure to the students as well as the faculty members for their professional growth. We believe in going beyond the prescribed curriculum to provide rich and meaningful academic and research exposure to our students. We believe that our research endeavors not only help us to discover new landscapes of knowledge but also gain a new vision. Therefore, in addition to their excellent curriculum transaction infused with creativity and innovations, the faculty members are actively involved in research activities of pedagogic relevance. The faculty strives to ensure that the research informs teaching‐learning process. The college offers the following programs affiliated to University of Mumbai: Bachelor of Education‐ B Ed Master of Education –M Ed, PhD (Education) programs along with the Post Graduate Diploma in Management of Education‐ PGDME, which is a part time program. The college houses IGNOU study centre 1601 offering more than 56 distance education programs including MA in Psychology; it is also a program
study center of IGNOU (1688P) for M Ed and MA Ed distance education programs and. The institution encourages the faculty members and the students to present their papers in state, national and international level seminars and conferences. Each year, our institution organizes two prestigious events‐ a two day National Seminar under Senior Scholars’ Seminar Series, popularly known as SSSS focusing on latest pedagogical issues and an intercollegiate competition Pratyush focusing on the rich cultural legacy of our country, Incredible India. The institution is proud to put on record that the talent pool of highly skilled education researchers of the institution bagged major research grants of UGC and ICSSR amounting to 25 lacs. My dear young students, Your role as teachers in the new millennium has become multifaceted and challenging. Our society expects you to be responsible for the holistic development of children. Your role as facilitators for social transformation will require you to be globally competent, humane, collaborative and multicultural in your outlook and capable of change management. You will need to cultivate social, moral and spiritual values in children. You have to develop in children nationalism and internationalism, prepare them to be global citizens, develop in them self learning skills and ICT skills and develop in them high social, emotional and spiritual quotient. To play this role effectively, we at the K. J. Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training and Research strive to equip you with the appropriate knowledge, skills, habits, attitudes and values. Faculty Profile
Dr. Vasundhara Padmanabhan is the Principal of college of education and a former secondary school teacher. Dr. Vasundhara Padmanabhan is a highly energetic, dynamic, innovative, goal‐driven educational visionary and manager with 20 years of experience. With a passion for making a mark wherever she goes, in a short period of five years, from 2004 to 2009, she was able to transform her institution, K. J. Somaiya College of Education and Research, Mumbai, India, from a financially unsound undergraduate institution to a financially sound post graduate institution and a research center offering post graduate courses in Education, Educational Management and Ph.D. programs, not to mention the distance education Post graduate programs in Education. Dr. Vasundhara has many paper presentations in international conferences and several publications to her credit. She has also standardized and patented a psychometric test as a part of her post‐doctoral research. She has been mentoring her faculty to present papers in national and international seminars, write research proposals for university research grants.
She began her career as a teacher educator in 1992 in a self‐financed institution where she gained extensive experience in teaching and research. As a visiting faculty of University of Mumbai, she pursued postgraduate teaching and research in Education. In addition, she acquired ICT (Information Communication Technology) skills and reputation as a competent and committed teacher educator. In 2004, when she was offered the Principal’s (Dean’s) post in a reputed self‐financed institution, she jumped at the opportunity to apply her creative problem solving skills in order to take the institution to greater heights.
Her areas of teaching are Methodology of Science and English, Educational Psychology, Educational Evaluation, Educational Technology, Research Methodology and Organizational Behavior. She is actively seeking roles where she can be a part of worldwide educational revolution that strives for equity, excellence and inclusion.
Dr. Kalpana Kharade, a former elementary school teacher with teaching experience in urban BMC and Private schools, has scaled great heights professionally all due to sheer determination and persistence. She is presently Associate Professor, a recognized PhD guide and Vice Principal of the College of Education. At KJSCCETR, right from its inception, her prowess in subjects such as Philosophical Foundations of Education, Methods of Teaching Languages, Teacher Education, Institutional Building and Evaluation is manifested in her effective curriculum transaction. A staunch propounder of inclusive education, especially for the visually challenged, Dr Kharade‘s thrust research areas include Qualitative research methods, Inclusive education, Instructional interventions for struggling readers and writers, Visually challenged and for children with diverse needs. She has persistently and diligently worked on preparing Personality development programs for the visually challenged girls, English speaking programs for vernacular medium students etc. Her scholarly pursuits have culminated in evolving instructional modules for constructivist learning strategies. Dr Kharade is a dynamic member of the committee on the Status of Blind Women, Guest speaker at the National Association for the Blind (NAB) and an proficient resource person for the IGNOU and YCMOU graduate education programmes. In November 2011, Dr Kalpana and Ms Rupal Thakkar jointly presented a paper in the London International Conference on Education which was very well appreciated by the participants. She was given recognition as the Core Committee Member of NCTE for two year M Ed curriculum framework. In recognition of her unstinted devotion to the field of education, she has been honored with the Neelam Kanga award (2002), Best Teacher award (2002) and Giant Group award for academic excellence (2007); In 2015, she received SVV Best Publication Award, Role Model Award from the Honorable president of India Mr. Pranab Mukherjee and Hirkani Award from Mumbai Doordarshan.
Armed with a Bachelors in Science and Education, a Master’s in Science and Education and NET qualified from UGC, Ms Rupal Thakkar is presently Assistant Professor at the K J Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training and Research. A first ranker throughout her course of Education, Ms Thakkar is a vibrant Practitioner of Psychology, Environmental Education as well as the paper on English Method at the B Ed level. Inspite of handling a plethora of papers without compromise on their quality, Ms Rupal made time to update her professional skills by acquiring a first class at the PGDME level in 2010. An ardent Environmentalist at heart, she has initiated as well as successfully concluded an assortment of environmental related activities as part of the Environmental club activities with the panache of an expert. Predictably her thrust areas in research include Environmental issues as well as developing strategies/modules for effective teaching learning of English.Presently she is Associated as a Counselor for the M.Ed.
(IGNOU)program in education. In November 2011, Dr Kalpana and Ms Rupal Thakkar jointly presented a paper in the London International Conference on Education.
Ms. Hema Bhadawkar is Assistant Professor at the K J Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training & Research. She holds post graduate degrees in History, Education and Philosophy to her credit. She is also certified in various computer applications such as DOS, Microsoft Office(98,NT,XP) Oracle, Internet and Programming Languages ( Oracle, Visual Basic, C, C++, FoxPro) etc. She embarked on her career in Education in 2006, where she confidently transacts the curriculum in Educational Evaluation at the B.Ed level as well as methodologies of History, Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit due to her flair for language. Hemisphericity and study habits find dominance among her areas of interest in research in education. Presently, she is associated as the Co‐ordinator of IGNOU 1601 Centre at K. J. Somaiya College of Education and Counselor and Research Guide for MA(Edu) of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University(YCMOU). She holds the distinction of being the only consultant from Mumbai for P D Hinduja College of Nursing and the only assessor for PGRP Program of YCMOU for the subject of Assessment and Evaluation. Ms. Hema completed her PGDME with a first class in 2010 and is currently enrolled for PhD under the guidance of Dr.Vasundhara Padmanabhan.
Ms. Usha Sharma Assistant Professor of Education, taught elementary school before beginning her career in Higher Education. Her tremendous flair for teaching enabled her to effectively teach students at all levels be it primary, secondary or college level. Her areas of scholarly interest include Guidance & Counseling, Psychology of Learning, and Mathematics Education at the B Ed level & Sociology of Education (M Ed level). Before joining Somaiya in 2009, she worked for the state board schools for nearly 11 years. In this institution, she teaches Mathematics method course to middle and high school aspiring teachers. Her research expertise enabled her to bag minor research grant from University of Mumbai through which she created constructivist based lesson resource for Mathematics teachers to teach Math at school level. To empower the 21st century mathematics teachers with global skills she enabled them to design lesson plans using infusion of multicultural elements into the Math curriculum.
Throughout her career, she has been active in state literacy initiatives through the Universalization of Education drive. Proficient in cultural arts, Ms Usha Sharma is the indomitable energizing force behind the success of every cultural program at this institution, a fact which was applauded even by the NAAC peer team in 2009. Never short of patience, she is keen to learn and has thus completed her Master’s Program in Sociology through IGNOU. Among her future aspirations is to conduct a workshop for training in‐service Math teachers on designing Multicultural based lesson plans.
She presented a paper titled ‘Embracing Diversities by Pre‐Service Teacher: Infusion of Multicultural Elements into the Mathematics Curriculum’ at the Anglo‐American Conference for Academic Disciplines at the University of London, United Kingdom from 4th Nov to 7th Nov,2014. Dr Sreetanuka Nath is Assistant Professor at K J Somaiya College of Education. She has cleared her UGC NET in Education. She has completed her PhD in Education from Dept. of Education, University of Mumbai. She obtained her Honours degree in Physics and went on to pursue Masters in Physics (MSc) from Banaras Hindu University. Subsequently she obtained her Master in Education (MEd) from SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. She had also completed her PG Diploma in Computer Applications. She is very much passionate in conducting Science demonstration elucidating upon various concepts of high school science. She has been editor of two ISBN books containing the Proceedings on 2 day National Seminars on “Building Asynchronous Learning Environments: Opportunities and challenges” and “Innovations in 21st Century Education” respectively. She has acumen in works related to construction of website development of activities for science teaching, generating scripts for content development, development of learning resources on the Web through tailored web design and finding their effectiveness, Teaching Science and Math at school and college level, conducting research work on latest methods of science and Math, conducting research on the effect and operability of Google Classroom and Flipped Classroom on teaching learning. She has published many articles and research papers in reputed national and international journals and magazines. Her thrust areas incorporate subjects such as ICT in Education, Research Methodology, Educational Technology and Science Education which she efficiently transacts. Apart from academic pursuits, she has interest in Rabindra Nritya and Kathak dance and went on to pursue Senior Diploma in Kathak from ‘Prayag Sangeet Samiti’, Allahabad. Ms. Takshashila Jadhav is a proactive, result oriented professional delivering excellence through effective communication, coordination, planning and execution. She holds a Master’s Degree in english Literature and Master’s om Education. She qualified her UGC NET (Edu) in the same year of her M.Ed qualification. Formerly she was a secondary teacher in CBSE School where she dealt with the subjectEnglish. Her earnest desire to foster students Language skills enabled her to conduct several activities in LSRW skills; it resulted in enhancing student’s confidence level and their annual English language score. Presently, she is an Asst. Prof in K.J.Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training & Research where she effectively transacts English and Educational Management. She attended the State Level Seminar on Soft Skills for Education and National Level Seminar on the Theme Innovations in 21st century Education. Her incl;ination towards Co‐curricular and Sports has been identified and therefore given its charge. She aspires to seek a
pioneering career in TeacherEducation, possess excellent leadership skills, open to good changes and have a strong zeal to achieve maximum in Life.
Dr. Pooja Birwatkar, Assistant Professor, has pursued her post‐doctoral research from Homi Bhabha Centre of Science Education and holds a Ph.D from Centre of Advanced Study in Education (CASE), Baroda. She holds a master’s degree in Science (Zoology) and Master’s in Education from CASE. At Masters of education level she has been a University topper and secured a distinction along with 2 GOLD Medals for securing highest percentage. She has also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Relation and Personnel Management‐(IRPM). Dr Pooja Birwatkar has throughout been meritorious student and earned a junior research fellowship (JRF) from ICSSR (Indian Council of Social Science Research) as well as scholarship from M.S University, Baroda for Ph.D.
Dr Pooja Birwatkar pursued her post‐doctoral research from 2012‐2014. She also worked as a Consultant with Observer Research Foundation (ORF) Mumbai. Her areas of interest include research in science; inquiry based learning, diversity and science education as well as environment education.
Dr. Divya Sharma is a Post Graduate in Zoology and Education. She is NET and JRF qualified and has completed Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education from IGNOU. She started her career as a UGC Research Fellow in 2001. She completed her Ph.D. on the topic A Comparative Study of Administrative Systems and Curriculum Designs at Secondary Stage in India and UK in 2007. This thesis is acquired by ICSSR and is a part of National Social Science Center (NASSDOC).With an ample teaching experience as Junior and Senior Research Fellow of more than five years she moved forward and in February 2007, joined as Principal of Narayani College of Education, Palanpur, Gujarat. The college was affiliated to S.N.D.T. University, Mumbai. She worked as Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Ganpat University in Mahesana from June 2008‐2014.
She has 13 years of progressive career in Education. During this tenure, she has taught B.Ed., M.Ed., M.A. (Education) and M.Phil (Education). She is also a Ph.D. Guide. Her areas of expertise include Educational Psychology, Curriculum Development, Total Quality Management and Educational Research Methodology.
She has functioned as the invited and nominated member of many prestigious committees like Exam Committee, NAAC, Board of Studies and Doctoral Committee. She is the Member of Review Board and Editorial board of reputed Journals. She has published eleven articles and research papers in reputed journals and magazines like University News and Edutracks. She has organized three National Level Seminars and has worked as editor for publication of proceedings.
Ms. Apurva Joshi is the Assistant Librarian at K. J. Somaiya Comprehensive College of Education, Training & Research. Infrastructure
Well Equipped Class Rooms All the class rooms are spacious and have comfortable seating arrangements. The Lecture Hall is equipped with public address system, LCD and smart board which facilitate the use of technology in curriculum transaction. Each classroom is installed with LCD projector. Library Ours is well stocked library with 8010 books completely bar coded along with 12 journals, 3 magazines, CDs of Encyclopedia Britannica & 110 years of National Geographic Journals. The library is completely automated and offers interlibrary loan facility. The library is equipped with textbooks of all school boards. There are 7891 titles with many more books being added to the rich stock. There is a provision for online access to EBSCO research database through campus subscription. The College has also an institutional membership for the library at Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Computer Laboratory The college is having full‐fledged computer laboratory with 39 computers on LAN and 24 hours Internet connection. The institution is equipped with Scanner, CD Writer and other equipments wherein the students and teacher educators fully avail the facilities. Open access is provided to students for internet and computers. Computer lab is equipped with latest web tools. Language Lab The college is equipped with Orell digital language lab with 1 teacher console and 10 student console. Hostel Facilities The institution offers hostel facilities to the students in the hostel located in the campus that is meant for all students of Somaiya Group of institutions. The third floor of the hostel has a separate exit and is exclusively for women. Canteen Facilities There are three canteens in the college campus that cater to the needs of the students. Psychology Laboratory Psychology Laboratory has many standardized tests of intelligence, emotional intelligence aptitude, creativity, anxiety, stress, etc. and also personality inventories,

Though the medium of instruction is English, students from other mediums of instructions can also seek admission. Grow professionally by being eligible for further education like Master of Education, Post Graduate Diploma in Management of Education, Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education offered by IGNOU and M.A. (Ed) of YCMOU and M.A. (Ed) and M.Ed offered by IGNOU. Eligibility – 55% in M Ed or any other post graduate degree with PET/NET/SET
Admission Procedure: Students with PET/NET/SET are to appear for interview in the Center where they are selected and allotted to guides. They register with the college and write the proposal. When the proposal is accepted, they register in the University for PhD.
4. Post Graduate Diploma in Management of Education (PGDME) It is a part time course of one year duration. Intake capacity is 60 students and the medium of instruction is English. The program intends to orient teachers to the various theories, principles and practices in the field of educational management and prepare in‐position and prospective middle level management personnel for their tasks as Principals, Vice Principals, CEOs, Administrators and Heads of Educational Institutions. Career Prospects Becoming better Principal / Vice Principal /HOD /administrator /supervisor Eligibility Candidate must have passed the degree of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) of this University or should be a Graduate in any faculty with three years of teaching and/or administrative experience in any educational institution recognized by the Government.
