WHY DO WE NEED RAID?

• Redundant array of independent disk

• RAID employs the technique of striping

• Allow overlapped disk I/O across drives

• To access information from several disks at the same time

Levels of fault tolerance:

• Level 1

• Level 2

• Level 3 -also called duplicating the server

- One or more disk putting together

-concatenation of several hard disk

-RAID array drive

Levels of RAID

•RAID 0

•RAID 1

•RAID 4

•RAID 5

•RAID 10

RAID 0

Data blocks are split based on stripe size

RAID 1

• When one hard disk fails , all data is immediately available

RAID 1 cont.

Disk Duplexing

RAID 4

The controller calculates the parity bit, which is stored in a separate hard disk

RAID 5

RAID 5 is similar to RAID 4. it delivers a balanced throughput.

RAID 10

Combination of RAID 0 and 1.

Requirements

• SCSI hard drives

• RAID Controller board

• RAID driver

Installation procedure

Pre Installation:

1. boot the server from the RAID software CDROM

2. Create a system disk for the OS3. Turn off the sever4. Disconnect the server from power5. Remove the server cover

Installation procedure cont.

Zero-channel RAID controller board:

Replace the riser board, with the RAID controller board in it

Power on the server and press <Ctrl> + <G>

Select the host drive type

Set the bios boot order:

Set up the following boot order:

Removable Devices

ATAPI CD-ROM Drive

Hard Drive

Intel (R) Boot Agent

RASWhat is RAS?

•RAS= Remote Access Server

•The ability to get access to a computer or a network from a remote distance

RAS Installation

• Windows NT Server Installation

Cont.

• Install NetBEUI protocol

Cont.

• TCP IP Address

Cont.

• Add RAS Under Service

RAS Configuration

Configure the Network parameters:

adjust the Bindings of the network components:

Cont.

Dailup-connection needs to be configured:

Configure the connection:

Cont.• Basics Connection

Cont.• Server network protocol ONLY

TCP/IP,

Cont.• Connection Script

Cont.• Ready to connect the Internet:

Cont.• Dialup Networking Monitor
