This week the Chronicle talked to potter Tony Sly.
Describe what you do and what you create?
We make a range of hand thrown pottery based around serving food.We work as a team much like running a kitchen with the tasks of prep, making, finishing and despatch divided up amongst the team of 5 - Eiko Yoshimura, Kelly Clarkson, Thomas Fitzgerald, Maree Harris and Frederick Kogler.
How did you end up based in Raglan?
Raglan was a natural progression from Hamilton. I was a regular visitor here so when my studio lease expired I decided it would be good to be based here.It has been a great move for me and my work!
What happens in a typical day?A typical day in the studio always
starts with making a list from orders received from retail clients in NZ and Australia.We make batch runs of the different shapes over a 6 week cycle so there always a lot of pottery in different
stages of making.How do you like being based at the
Wharf? What changes have you made lately to your space there?
We love being at the wharf on the water and are very excited to have opened our new retail space. We can now display our range fully and have complemented our pieces with some great artisan homewares sourced on our travels to Europe.
Describe your dream holiday?My partner Frederick is Austrian and
keeps an apartment and car in Frankfurt so we are fortunate to travel to Europe during Raglan winter months. We enjoy some R and R in Croatia mostly but always fit in a visit to a European city each year.
If you weren't a potter what would you be?
If I wasn't a potter I would probably be a chef or nurseryman. Like pottery, taking ingredients from scratch to create something and being surrounded by productivity seems so natural and right for me.
What can we expect from Tony Sly for 2014?
2014 will be very exciting as we are set up for some new work, including some larger on of a kind pieces that have been on my mind.
New years resolution?I didn't do to well on last years
resolution so will give it another go this year.'To be more understanding!'

B & B pioneers reflect on 17-year dream lifestyle at Moonlight Bay
Their own paradise: Edi and Therese Stump and the lush surrounds of Waters Edge

Hosting visitors to Raglan in their boutique accommodation on the
harbour’s edge at Moonlight Bay has been a way of life for 17 years for Edi and Therese Stump – one they admit they’ll miss when they leave it all behind next month for a different lifestyle on the east coast.
Waters Edge – offering bed and breakfast in both a waterfront suite and a 120-year-old cottage sited on the same Greenslade Road property as their home – has been a wonderful experience, says Therese, and exactly what she set out to create.
Therese and Edi, who are now 68 and 70, made the move in 1997 from city life in Hamilton to their beach-house and bach in Raglan to fulfil a dream. They’d experienced the ‘zimmer frei’ mode of accommodation in Europe years before on a family visit to Swiss-born Edi’s homeland.
“I nurtured the idea of having my own homestay one day,” Therese told the Chronicle. “We loved the friendly warmth of staying in people’s homes and learning from the locals the places of interest and the customs.”
So they set about renovating the property, work which included building a garage with an attached suite. They’d already converted the neglected 100-year-old bach on site into a charming cottage, says Therese, preserving its antique coal range and landscaping the grounds.
It was a labour of love, she says, fitted in whenever they were able over the first five years of owning the property while still living and working in Hamilton.
But Therese had begun to begrudge the time she spent working in real estate – which ironically had led her to the property in the first place – as it took her away from “fulfilling my dream”.
And so Waters Edge evolved as a B & B and homestay with Therese
making not sales but fresh bread, jam and marmalade for visitors who came to enjoy a touch of luxury in harbourside Raglan. The couple have loved pampering guests from all walks of life, they say, and sharing their “paradise” with its subtropical gardens and native bush.
In the early days Raglan had only two B & Bs, recalls Therese, and they’ve always had to turn away far more people than they could accommodate. Some of those who’ve stayed over the years – and returned – have become personal friends.
Edi and Therese added chalet accommodation to the mix 13 years ago when the house next door came up for sale, but then sold it again last year in an effort to reduce the workload and focus their energies on the original business.
Not that they’ve ever really thought of Waters Edge as a business. “It’s a lifestyle … it’s never been about dollars and cents.”
A highlight of their venture came five years ago when Edi and Therese travelled to a symposium at a university in Taiwan where Therese was invited as a guest speaker on B & B operations in New Zealand. While it was “quite scary” giving a half hour powerpoint presentation, Therese says it was a “pretty special” occasion and they were treated like royalty during their five-day stay.
But now the couple are moving on, to a retirement village which Therese describes as closer to Papamoa than to Tauranga. She admits they’ve “slowed down”, and after years of putting other people first they now want time to themselves. “We believe we’re doing the right thing.”
Waters Edge changes hands at the end of February, and while they never intended to sell it as a going concern she and Edi are delighted their dream lives on and that a Raglan couple of five years want to continue running it as a bed and breakfast.

Whaanga Coast construction gets underway againConstruction work on Whaanga Coast’s new wastewater scheme will get underway again from Monday after a brief break to avoid disrupting residents and visitors in the area during the holiday period.
Work on the 10km pipeline began in November last year near the Raglan Wastewater Treatment Plant, continuing along Wainui Road.
Completion date is scheduled for April 2014.

Bay, because exciting things often happen.
Last week the Year 3 student got to tick off a big wish when he caught his first eel.
“Me and Da went for a walk along a track. We went through bushes and then we got to the lake and there were some eels biting the bait. When we got close one eel swam away so I threw some more bait in and it took it. It tried to get off the hook and was thrashing around but I just kept pulling it in,” says Rusty.
Once caught Da took care of dispatching the 80 cm eel by cutting off its head. Even then much to Rusty’s surprise, the headless the eel kept squirming for a minute or two.
No doubt when school goes back Rusty will be sharing his eel-catching adventures with his mates at Hillcrest Normal School.

Aday spent fishing in Whaingaroa Harbour last winter will feature
next month in an episode of a new series on Prime Television.
But don’t expect it to be just another of those fishing shows that crowd the free-to-air channels on Saturday afternoons: the episode’s part of ‘Keeping It Pure’, a six-parter about the New Zealand environment and the way we treat it which will occupy a prime 8.30 slot on Sunday evenings.
While the series begins this Sunday, Raglan viewers will have to wait until February 16 – when an episode entitled ‘The sea around our coast’ screens – to see a fishing party put the health of Whaingaroa Harbour and its fishing stocks to the test.
And though the Greenstone TV production is a critical look at
how New Zealand measures up to the “100% pure” label coined by Tourism New Zealand in 1999, the Raglan segment is expected to show in a very positive light what has been achieved locally by Whaingaroa Harbour Care – in co-operation with local farmers – in improving water quality.
Fred Lichtwark, manager of Whaingaroa Harbour Care from whose boat the fishing took place, says the optimum was to be able to catch eight snapper an hour and “the fish behaved”.
“It seemed we were hooking them every few minutes or so, and that was in winter time when the fishing’s normally not so good,” he says. “It was a damn sight more than you’d catch in Hokianga or Kaipara.
“Their fishing grounds are diminishing and seagrass beds depleting whereas we’ve got it all back over a couple of decades.”
The fishing was filmed by a television crew aboard Ian Hardie’s boat and Fred’s hoping the Raglan footage will form a substantial chunk of the episode, the second to last in the NZ on Air-funded series.
Prominent local farmer David Peacocke was also interviewed about the importance of reducing runoff, and Fred thinks there could even be footage of orca as he has a vague recollection they were sighted in the harbour that day.
The work of Whaingaroa Harbour Care has featured on various television programmes over the years, including, Fred says '60 Minutes' and a ‘New Zealand Exposed’ doco on TV One, but he remains “really surprised” at how few locals seem familiar with the organisation’s work. “It’s generally only those who’ve been around a long time who seem to know about us and what we do,” he says.

Iconic bluesman’s bach on market
Arelaxing sanctuary for the Kiwi icon, musician Midge
Marsden bought his Raglan home over 30 years ago and although the house will be sorely missed, the property is up for sale.
Originally a boathouse, over the years Midge has spent a considerable amount of time working on the 1940s-style bungalow. With three double bedrooms, two bathrooms and panoramic views of Raglan harbour, the light-filled bach is truly a homely little hideaway.
“I’ve had my share of wonderful times there and I’m going to miss it a lot,” he said.
Spacious but cosy, the open-plan living area is great for entertaining and the character bach has had many visitors including the likes of American blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan, Comedian Gary McCormick and former All Black Josh Kronfeld.
The bungalow has also been operating as a premiere holiday rental property “Whare Midge,” with guests enjoying the big deck overlooking the wharf as well as Midge’s LPs and music memorabilia.
“I always love reading the visitor’s book. The number of
people that have said the neatest things about this place, there’s been some wonderful comments over the years,” said Midge.
He is secretly hoping that somebody buys the property for holiday rental so that he can return to the house every now and then.
Selling up to ease the burden of owning two properties, Midge feels it’s ‘the right time’ to let somebody else enjoy the home.
“I’ll definitely miss the sanctuary of it. The moment you walk through the door, you leave everything behind and enjoy the place for what it is,” he said.
His connection to Raglan however is as strong as ever and with plenty of friend’s houses to stay, Midge will still be making regular visits to Raglan. An auction for the property will be held on site at 1pm, 1 February 2014.

While the posters around town said ‘Ladies, Show Us Your
Gurnard’, the fact is that fish don’t have to take centre-stage or even be caught to stage a fabulously successful fishing tournament.
For proof of this, you only needed to be at the Raglan Club last Saturday night to witness the spectacle, fun and sheer enjoyment of the multitudes who all gathered to talk about the one that got away and to support a most worthy cause – Breast Cancer.
One of the organisers, our very own Raglan Wharf Seagull Graham Hubert, said before the final prize night it was really bad luck that for two years in a row “no fishing had been had” but with so much on offer to get involved in at the dry prize-giving night, there would be no excuses for anyone to not have a great time. Turns out he was right!
“Raglan Club is the perfect venue for this event. It’s the only place in town where so many people can easily be accommodated and enjoy themselves. I was absolutely delighted in how well the evening went and to top it off, the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust received more than $2,500.”
The novelty auction, kicked off proceedings but only after research nurse Jenni Scarlet from the Breast Cancer Trust spoke about how critical funding for breast cancer research was.
“Statistics show that on average one woman in the Waikato is diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Your contributions tonight will support all these women,” said Jenni.
Waikato is one of the most active New
Zealand regions for breast cancer research and over the past 10 years the Trust has supported more than 30 different studies/clinical trials including radiotherapy, drug trials and new surgical treatments for breast cancer.
The auction alone made $1749 for the Trust from a whole mixed-bag of items including a beautiful blue/green rock donated by Sayers Landscape Supplies.
Another auction item, a half-day cruise for a lady on a Road and Sport Harley Davidson was fiercely contested between Raglan Club’s caterer Alison Kite and local Craig Bridgeman with Ali securing the top bid, while a Warriors rugby league shirt, signed by the whole team, fetched $350.
Getting into the spirit of ‘dress-up’ big-time, nine teams stood up in the best-dressed fishing team comp with the ‘Pirates’ team taking top honours.
“It was a great night, with a huge thanks to all supporters, sponsors and in particular to Julie Hanna, our MC, PR person and Gurnard cake maker; she’s the face of Gals n Gurnard.
Graham says it wasn’t easy to decide on the focus charity to donate tournament proceeds to.
“There are so many really worthy causes in Raglan but we decided to support Breast Cancer research because ‘this cause is all around us’, he explains.
With two highly successful fishing tournaments under the banner of Gals ‘n Gurnards, without a fish being weighed, Graham and the team are hoping for more sympathetic sea conditions when the event is held next year.

Surf comp kicks off 2014 Waikato Tainui gamesThis year sees the sixth biennial
Waikato-Tainui Games held over January and February and the event will be kicking off with a surf comp held at Manu Bay this weekend.
Now in its third year as an official sport of the games, the surfing event is gaining popularity with tribes represented by the likes of Daniel Kereopa, Jess Santorik and Mikey Banks.
In previous years the event has been held, it’s been “really fun and local,” said one of the coordinators, Arna-Rose Solomon.
Competitors of all ages competed at the last surfing event with the youngest being Whetu Muru. The 3-year-old from Turangawaewae Marae took to the waves in the under-12 division on the front of his dad Harley’s malibu.
“There’s a lot of healthy competition. I think we take it for granted that a lot of professional surfers are Maori and it’s really neat to see them connect with their marae,” said Arna-Rose.
With the theme of ‘Whakawhanaungatanga’ the games are all about making connections with family
and is a smoke, drug, alcohol and gang free event open to all tribal members.
Promoting healthy family environments, the surfing event is putting a strong emphasis on the whangai aspect of whanau. To do with the concept of adopting or fostering family members, the whangai aspect is all about being inclusive and embracing the multicultural nature of our community.
Although the games are for tribal members, Arna-Rose encourages people that want to participate to get in contact with their local marae.
“In the ocean it doesn’t really matter where you’re from. The whangai concept gives everybody an opportunity to participate,” she said.
With over 64 maraes and 120 competitors getting involved with the games over the next couple of weeks in events like tennis, waka ama, touch and chess, enjoy a family day at Manu Bay this weekend and watch the local tribes battle it out in the water.

Fears the local shuttle service to Hamilton for people needing
to get to medical appointments is about to be canned have been rejected but some jobs have been affected in a Raglan Community House restructuring, and a CV preparation service will no longer be offered.
Chrissy Hodkinson, who remains Community House co-ordinator until a new House Manager is appointed, says the CV help is the only service affected by the revamp and “we never had funding for it anyway.
“We have to pull back our operation in that area until we do get some funding,” she says.
Chrissy quickly dispelled rumours about town last week that the medical shuttle was affected by the restructuring, pointing out the van is the responsibility of a separate community trust and “we only handle the bookings” for transport to and from Hamilton for medical appointments.
However some jobs have been affected in the restructuring, which Genny Wilson – Chairperson of the Committee which runs the Community House – says is aimed at generating efficiencies and savings after demand outstripped funding.
Chrissy says staff had the opportunity to express their interest in the new positions in a process run in consultation with human resources professionals. The new positions were offered internally first, and those leaving did not want to go to fulltime work.
Chrissy herself will now go down to 20 hours a week and says she’s very happy with the move. She will become Public Relations Advisor,
concerned with the external focus of the Community House.
A new House Manager position has been created from what was the Co-ordinator position. The job – which has been advertised, with applications closing on January 13 – will have an internal focus, with the new “face” or front of house running the day-to-day operations. .
Meanwhile Genny Wilson points out her Committee, as the governing body of the Raglan Community House Incorporated Society with accountability to the Ministry of Social Development and other funders such as Trust Waikato, must make sure services are delivered effectively and efficiently.
“The reality is we have demand outstripping what we are funded for. We have to manage, and so we are restructuring to get maximum bang for the buck. We need to be more efficient with what we are doing and at the same time we are actively chasing [new] funding.”
She adds that while the Committee can’t sustain the CV service, “we are open to the possibility of a business sponsoring this very useful service and keeping it going”.
She also reiterates the community van is run by a separate charitable trust contracted to the Waikato District Health Board.
The Community House offers a diverse range of services including budgeting help, subsidised counselling, advocacy, a bargain basement and a drop-in lounge.
Other services include photocopying, fax and phone access, provision of outreach offices for Community Law, the probation service and a hearing therapist, wheelchair and room hire, local information and public toilets. Edith Symes
