April 29thONE of the most popular roadraces in the country, this annualrace for many years incorporatedthe National Fifteen Mile Cham-pionship, but in the last few yearsthe National has been held in dif-ferent venues throughout thecountry, therefore taking some ofthe big names from the race.

However, a good entry wasreceived this year, including twoformer winners, Pat O'Riordanwho holds the course record of73.45 and Dick Hodgins. Anotherinteresting entry was GerryStaunton, the Galway man whoruns for Liffey Valley and who has a

number of first class road perform-ances to his credit this year.

Staunton and O'Riordan, alongwith Mick Lawton of Leevale,headed the field from the start andshortly before halfway O'Riordanwas dropped. Staunton andLawton battled on, against a strongwind at times, but with two miles togo Staunton finally broke clear tofinish in a time of 16.54 over aminute ahead of Lawton, whoimproved considerably on his timeof last year. O'Riordan was anisolated third with Hodgins fourth.Paul Mulholland of Midleton had a

great run to finish in fifth positionahead of another Leevale runner,Gene Mealy. Gerald Walsh, whorecently ran in the Essone Mara-thon in Paris was seventh. Leevalehad an easy win in the team racewith neighbours St. Finbarrssecond and Reenavanna ofLimerick third.

Ted Pepper'Seven'

7th May 1979EDWARD 'TED' PEPPER will beknown personally to many ath-letes. He joined BlackheathHarriers in 1961 and representedthe Club with success on the road,track and cross country.

He was a person who nevershirked a duty and who alwayssought a challenge; it was thislatter spirit which led him to com-pete in the 1978 Three Peaks race,23 miles over the mountainousregion of the North YorkshirePeaks. ln weather conditions asbad as the race organisers had everknown Ted lost his way afterpassing the final check point anddied from hypothermia before hecould be found by the rescuepa rties.

Ted throughout his runningcareer was especially prominenton the road and it was on the roadthat he won a Kent County vest. lnrecognition of these achievementsand to commemorate his memorythe Blackheath Harriers Committeedecided to stage the 'Ted' PepperMemorial Race which it is hopedwill become an annual event. Therace was sponsored by Colling-wood of Conduit Street Ltd, thecompany of which Ted was adirector.

Collingwood have presented themagnificent Silver Edward PepperMemorial Trophy which will beawarded annually to the individual

winner who will also receive areplica to retain.

The race was started by Mrs.Pepper, Ted's widow.

So to the race itself . . .

Despite a warm sun and a strongbreeze the field was split from thevery start of the race. A group offive contested the lead on the firstlap of three circuits, incluoing MickGratton, Richard Coles. MickRussell, Paul Caden and tucked inbehind these four - Barry Watson.Just before the start of lap twoRussell accelerated and quicklybuilt up a lead of some twentyyards on his immediate pursuer,Barry Watson. Gaden followed tenyards in f ront of Coles and Grattenwith the rest of the f ield well spreadout. At this stage the Vets Racebeing run in conjunction lookedrnteresting with John Oliver, (Cam-bridge Harriers) and BarryO'Gorman (Blackheath) neck andneck, whilst former British lnter-national Hugh Foord (Brighton)had made welland truly sure of theover fifty prize.

Up front Watson appeared tostrike up a conversation withthe Croydon man - however allspeculation as to whether or notthey planned to finish togetherwasdispelled near the finish when theformer A.A.A. Marathon Cham-pion sprinted to the front to comehome a worthy winner. Barry toldme after the race that he felt theneed of some speed training inview of his forced lay-off last yearand his planned marathon racesfor this coming season, and sincehe felt that this race deservedbacking he was most pleased totake part.

Mick Russell came home com-fortably in second spot havingtried his best early on to front runto victory. The race for the minorplacings proved most absorbingand it was only in the last mile thatGaden of Torbay managed to priseopen a gap on Gratten and Coleswho in turn had a fine 'dust up'forfourth and fifth places.

The team race was an easy thingfor a powerful lnvicta squad forwhom Peter Brenchley missed outon the premier team award by ablink of an eyelid.

ln the Vets race John Oliver ranwell to clinch first place - a greateffort after a week of pain anddental treatment due to an abcessunder the tooth.

ALWYN DEWHIRST, the Engtandinternational who is to leave Aire-dale and Spen Valley AC forHolmfirth Harriers at the end of themonth, gave his old and new club-mates a run to remember inthe Longwood '10' sponsored byPaddock Motors, at Huddersfield.

The 27-year-old schoolteacher,who lives in the Holme Valley,scored an upset win in 48min 30secover fellow international GrahamEllis who will be his new captainwhen he switches clubs.

Ellis,23, the Yorkshire CCAcham-pion and one of the most formid-able road racers in the country wasin contention untilthe six mile markbut slumped to fifth at the end in49min 56sec.

wards that he did not feel that rhemidweek 3,000 metres on the trackat Cleckheaton contributed to hisdownfall yet he did admit to feelingtired from the word 'go'.

Robert Harbisher of Longwood,who is breaking through into topclass, also competed in that mid-week track race; but produced acareer best ten mile time of 48min49sec.

It was Harbisher, 25, who set thepace at Cleckheaton and he showedthe same enterprise at Hudders-field, zipping through the first threemiles well inside five minute milepace.

The chasing pack, headed byDewhrrst, Ellis and a fit-lookingMike Baxter of Leeds cauEht theLongwood man by four miles andDewhirst led into the wind up theonly hill on the course.

The leaders went through fivem i les in 24min48sec- 1 4sec fasterthan last year when Ellis set thecourse record at 48min 4sec - andDewhirst made his crucial break atthe top of the hill. He said after-wards that he wanted to make thepace as u ncomfortable as hepossibly could for Ellis and histactics paid off.
