Classification of humans according to physical characteristics

Culturally defined differences between ethnic groups in the society

Race Ethnicity

Ethnic Group

A group of people with common cultural background

According to G. Thomas’ theory of the “definition of the situation” – the physical characteristics that identify the group is not important but the feeling of belonging to each other

Minority Group

A group of people that is numerically lesser than the rest of the population

Non-dominant position, possess ethnics religious or linguistic characteristics which distinguish them from the rest of the population

Minority Group

Its members share a sense of solidarity and a desire to preserve their culture, traditions, religion or language

Characteristics of a minority groupThe members suffer various disadvantages at the hand of another group

They are identified by group characteristics that are socially visible

It is a self-conscious group with a strong sense of “oneness”

Characteristics of a minority groupThey do not become members of a minority group voluntarily but are born into it

They tend to marry within the group
